Advertising vs Public Relations....what is the difference? E-Agency Public Relations, a company which offers a broad array of services to make a public relations plan produce results, said advertising increases name recognition; while public relations increases credibility.
“When people read a story about the excellence of your organization in a newspaper or see a story praising your company on television, they are much more likely to have a favorable opinion of your organization,” the company said.
Renée Prejean-Motanky, a strategic marketing and communications management professional and consultant, in her article entitled The Difference Between Advertising and PR said, “Public relations can almost be regarded as a bigger activity than advertising because it relates to all the communications of the total organization; whereas advertising, although it may cost more than public relations, is mainly limited to the marketing/sales function.”
Advertising vs. Public Relations / Money Talks
Ana Ventura, a public relations expert at DrNunley's, in her article called Advertising Versus Public Relations-- What's the Difference? said, “One of the most crucial differences between public relations and advertising is that PR is free. That's right, none of your hard earned cash is going to be thrown down to promote your business.”
“For example, if you run an advertisement in your local newspaper, they charge you for the space you use as well as for the time frame that the ad is run. But if that same newspaper decides that your business or product is article worthy, you are getting great publicity with no out of pocket costs,” Ms. Ventura said.
However, Ms. Ventura suggested that for the success of the business, advertising and public relations must go hand-in-hand.
Advertising vs. Public Relations / Both is Better
“The most effective marketing strategy encompasses a comprehensive plan that includes a communications mix of marketing tools, that should include advertising and public relations. The two work hand-in-hand to produce desired results,” she said.
Ms. Ventura added, “There are great benefits in both the worlds of advertising and public relations. Depending on your budget and your needs, you can figure out a combination that will suit you best.”
Writer Anita Paul, in her article entitled Advertising Versus Public Relations, suggested that advertising and public relations compliment each other: “… advertising and public relations can complement each other if they are both used effectively with supporting messages,” Ms. Paul said.
Advertising vs. Public Relations / Do You Hear That Buzz?
In particular, Ms. Paul defined advertising as "a long-term method of communicating a message, with frequency to current and/or prospective customers via a chosen medium or mediums; while she defines public relations is a program composed of messages designed to educate, position, increase public awareness, create a positive image, interest or ‘buzz’.”
