A Story of Courage / Walt Disney
“All our dreams can come true,
if we have the courage to pursue them.”
Walt Disney
Perhaps, this quote is the best illustration of the life motto of Walter Elias Disney, a world-known film producer, animator, screenwriter and entrepreneur, who built a fable world, known as Disneyworld. He used all his imagination and passion to incarnate the brightest dreams of children. However, the life of a man, who created such a joyful, kind, and amusing world, was not all fun and games.
Born in 1901, Walter Disney, had been interested in arts from the early years of his childhood. He made his first money by drawing a horse for one of his neighbors. Though at that time it was not easy for a family with five children, and lack of money was not rare, Walt Disney always received support from his relatives to develop his drawing talent.
A Story of Courage / Humor in the Face of Danger
During the First World War, Walt Disney attempted to enlist for military service, but he was refused for being underage. However, the young man joined Red Cross and went to France, where he became an ambulance driver. Even in a military environment, Walt Disney did not stop drawing his funny cartoons. His ambulance car was all covered with Disney cartoons instead of a stock military camouflage.
After returning from France, Walt Disney started a career in animation art. After the first success with cutout animation, Disney started his first company and focused on cel animation, which seemed more promising to him. Soon Disney’s cartoons became widely popular in Kansas City area. He hired many other animators to work along with him, but could not manage money properly, and soon the company ended up bankrupt.
A Story of Courage / Persistence in the Face of Failure
However, after that failure Walt Disney did not despair and set himself a new even more ambitious goal of joining movie industry at Hollywood. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was the first instant success cartoon character created by Disney in Hollywood. However, because of a dispute with the distribution company, Walt Disney lost the Oswald trademark, as well as his animation staff.
Again Walt Disney was left on his own. And again such misfortune only stimulated the artist to create something new – this time the world known Mickey Mouse was born. This character brought first Academy Award to Walt Disney in 1932. In the following years Donald Duck, Pluto, and Goofy appeared. In 1937 Disney made the first full-length animated musical feature, called Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, which made 1.5 million dollars. In 1955 Walt Disney made another dream come true – the first Disneyworld amusement park was opened.
In spite of all the failures and misfortunes during his life, Walter Disney always remained optimistic. He demonstrated courage by developing novel and revolutionary ideas – whether it was cel animation, full-length animation, or full-color television programming – Walt Disney was the first or among the first to work in this field. Finally, Walt Disney was the first and the only person, who presented the world with unique Disneyland.
