California Manufacturers / The Golden State's Economic Outlook

Being the most populous and the third largest state of the United States of America, California currently features a powerful economy. The GDP (gross domestic product) value, generated by all California manufacturers, is comparable to that generated by some countries, such as Italy, for example. If California were a separate country, it would be in the list of top 10 largest economies in the world.

Though multiple California manufacturers are involved in a diverse variety of business activities, the largest intake into the state’s economy is contributed by trade and international commerce. The largest sectors of the California economy are trade, transportation, business services, education and health, and, of course, hospitality, tourism and entertainment.

In general, there are more than 30,000 companies, involved in manufacturing, processing and technology business in California. Since 1918, the special organization, called California Manufacturers and Technology Association (CMTA), works to improve business climate for those companies, enhance governmental regulation and protect the state’s environmental resources.

Among the members of California Manufacturers and Technology Association are such companies, as Ausra, Inc., which designs and produces solar energy systems, FuelCell Energy, manufacturing fuel cells for industrial, commercial and municipal customers. Hormel Food Corporation, which is a multinational manufacturer and marketer of meat and food products, is also a member of CMTA.

California Manufacturers / The Top Ten Manufacturers
The top California manufacturers include such world-known companies, as Chevron, dealing with petroleum, Hewlett-Packard Company, Apple Computers, and Intel Corp – all working in the sphere of informational technologies and high-tech. Atlantic Richfield Company, which deals with oil, Safeway, which is a grocery stores network, American Honda Motor Co., Rockwell International, McKesson Corp., and Walt Disney also have their headquarters in California.

Economic Regions
California is also known for its significant economic regions, where the manufacturers, focused on some particular type of business or industry, are concentrated. For example, Hollywood is a world known center of film and entertainment industry; Silicon Valley has already become a synonym for the home of high-tech and computers; Central Valley is the place, where agriculture is highly developed; and it is Sonoma Valley, which is known for its wine industry.

Transportation

Finally, it is impossible not to mention transportation, which forms a kind of a backbone or a connecting link for all types of business in California. Highways, expressways, and freeways form a core of California transportation system, for which the California Department of Transportation is responsible. Two international airports are located in Los Angeles and San Francisco. There are also several important seaports in California, such as Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. Rail and bus travels are provided by Amtrak Californian and Greyhound.
