In California, community services are being promoted at various levels. People realize the importance of their community and are willing to actively participate for the betterment of their society. In fact, a large number of people can be seen working as part of various non-profit organizations. Some of these great organizations are:
1. Community Network Services California / Community Network of Organizations Working for Disables
This community network is composed of organizations that are determined to help the people with disabilities under the governor’s office OAFN i.e. office for access and functional needs. Some organizations that are part of this network are:
• The California Council of the Blind
The California Council of the Blind strives to gain full independence and equality of opportunity for all blind and visually impaired Californians, since 1934. CCB is a non-profit and tax-exempt organization.
• Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Centre
DHHSC is a private, non-profit organization, working actively in California to serve individuals that are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind and late deafened. The organization also supports their friends and families and the community service providers.
• California Foundation for Independent Living Centers
California Foundation for Independent Living Centers envisions civil rights for all people with disabilities and is composed of 25 independent living centers, throughout the state.
2. Community Network Services California / California After School Network
This network is designed to influence policy and coordinate local and statewide efforts to positively engage the young people in and supported by their communities after their school time to promote their physical, social, emotional and educational well-being. The organizations that fund this network are:
• Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation supports efforts that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society.
• The David Lucile and Packard Foundation
The David Lucile and Packard Foundation works to improve the lives of children, enable the creative pursuit of science, advance reproductive health, and restoration of earth’s natural system.
• California Department of Education
California Department of Education leads and supports the continuous improvement of student achievement.
3. Community Network Services California / Ex-Offender Action Network
This organization has a vision to help the formerly incarcerated to concentrate on their societal, social and educational needs in order to become full participants in protecting and serving the communities in which they work and live.
Some services provided by EAN are: education courses, drug and alcohol treatment, job training and placement opportunities, and fatherhood program. The supporting organization of EAN network is Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, which is itself a network of 47 small and medium sized African-American congregations that span the Los Angeles County.
