Community Service For Teenagers / Getting Motivated

Community Service or volunteering has gained worldwide recognition in recent years. In its broad term, community service is the involvement of people in unpaid projects, conducted for the betterment of the community.

More and more teenagers are being motivated to interact with their local community and to take part in an assortment of useful community projects. Various government organizations and NGOs are conducting programs at schools to encourage students especially teens (12-19) to take part in community services (also known as youth services). The youth services programs conducted in high schools help the students to gain an outdoor (or outside) education, often termed as experiential education, while participating in different social activities and organized events.

According to some studies, 55% of all youth in America has contributed in community services. 59% of those teens belong to non-disadvantaged group (i.e. they have economically strong backgrounds) and 49% of the teens belong to minorities like Black, Hispanic or Latino, or are born outside U.S. Overall, 16% of Latinos take part in the community services.

Some of the reasons that minority teenagers do not take part in community services are their economic hardships, lack of time, lack of parental support and other responsibilities. However, it is seen that when the youth from challenged backgrounds participate in community interaction they show full devotion and dedication towards delivering their services.

Students and teens are playing their role in the improvement of society by participating in different forms of social activities including fundraising, collecting or distributing food, local decision making, spending time with senior citizens, working in the local library, distributing awareness pamphlets and much more. Being an active part of society, teens not only learn to give and sacrifice but they also get a chance to improve their volunteering habits, skills, psychological development, civic engagement, nationalism and self esteem.

It is also shown that students who participate regularly in the community services are more concentrated towards their studies and are more likely to show improved results in their studies. Also, it has become a convention in high schools and universities to accept and prioritize those students who have contributed towards civic engagement and community services and have been actively involved in the society.

Youth involvement in civic events and other government related community services has become a popular way to introduce to teens ways that they can make a difference. When teens are able to participate in these programs, it allows them to develop the confidence and responsibility that a good leader must have.

To improve the chance of more youths participating in these programs, a new legislation passed recently, The Serve America Act. According, to this legislation, the students participating in volunteer programs will be entitled to many benefits and will be facilitated by improved opportunities to achieve the goals in their lifetime. With this legislation, the participation of youth can be expected to grow tremendously and an influx of change will be visible over the next few years.

All one has to do is "Google" youth programs and services in your city to come up with an extensive list of opportunities to participate in. Apathy is likely to be a trend in the teenage population if they do not have mentors, interested parents or teachers that care. The responsibility lies with all of us. If we complain about our disinterested youth, then it is up to us to participate in a remedy and not just add to a consciousness of negativity. As always... action speaks louder than words.
