According to the American community survey (2005 – 2007), out of total population, there are 13.5% kids who are five years to fourteen years of age. It will be a huge disservice to ignore such a huge population of young hearts and minds.

We as adult members of our communities should cultivate the qualities of care, socialism, devotion, awareness about community and a passion to serve the community in our kids. If we focus too much on ourselves - our work, our lack, and our problems - rather them nurturing their gifts, the future will not play out in a positive way.

Children get bored easily. If interesting activities are not presented to them they will spend their whole time in front of television and playing video games. How sad it would be if a child were never introduced to the gifts that lie inside of them because no one thought it was important enough to take the time.

When encouraging the participation of kids in community service, the idea is not to impose chores (leave that to the parents). The intention behind constructive community service is to show that participating in life is enjoyable and healthy. When their open and curious natures are rewarded by having a good time doing something they normally wouldn't do, it instills a proactive nature that will serve them well in the future.

While looking for community service ideas for kids, it is important to focus on factors like age the of the kids, their interests and level or difficulty of the community service activity. Also, it is a great idea to divide the kids in small groups to work on projects, so that they can share their ideas and enjoy their assignments while being with their friends. In this type of atmosphere the kids will learn to listen to others' points of view and also learn the importance of teamwork.

• Encourage kids to draw or paint, and then to sell those drawings and/or pictures at an organized event. Then have them research a charity that their profits can go to.

• Encourage older children to help the younger kids in their studies. Stress the importance of patience in the older kids and gratitude in the younger children.

• Ask children to visit an elder care center and to read books or stories to some of the folks that live there. Or just have them ask questions about some of the experiences of the older folks.

• Have the kids pick up papers or trash that was thrown in the school lawns.

• Conduct an awareness group educating them about benefits of vaccinations.

• Work in groups to research and discuss the importance of recycling, and come up with ideas that can contribute to keeping their community green.

•Organize a visit to the Pediatric Cancer ward of a nearby hospital, and have the kids spend time with these children. Allow a conversation to develop which will open their eyes to how these kids are dealing with a difficult challenge.

• Have them help their mothers at home and explain the importance of getting to know their mothers by asking questions about how and where they were raised.

• Have them help their younger brothers and sisters and encourage them to seek advice on topics they don't understand.

• Have them write letters for elderly people in the community.

• Have them wash cars for senior citizens.

• Ask them to share a talent you have with their peers.

• Have them help senior citizens the basics of operating a computer.

• Ask them to teach their classmates a skill that someone passed on to them.
