So...what is Facebook? And who is Mark Zuckerberg?
Ever wondered how cyberspace’s biggest and most popular website, FaceBook got its start? FaceBook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg a computer science major from Harvard University.
Creator of FaceBook / The History
Mark was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York. His dad Edward is a dentist while his mom Karen is a physician. Even during his younger years, Mark has always been fascinated by computers and programming. He reportedly developed a program for his father’s office while he was still attending Philipps Exter Academy. He also created a music program called Synapse which can be programmed to learn the user’s listening habits through artificial intelligence. Microsoft and AOL were interested in purchasing Synapse and heavily recruited Mark. He opted to go to Harvard University instead.
Creator of FaceBook / Bite By the Love Bug
He reportedly got the idea to start a social networking website as a way to distract him from thinking about a certain girl and pass his art history exam. While FaceBook was still in its infancy, Mark started the website by letting Harvard students fill up a template for FaceBook. The project became popular that it began to take up a lot of his time.
Two days to go before his art history final where he had to discuss 500 slides from the Augustan period, Mark sought the help of his online friends and soon he was swamped with messages, notes and images from students, classmates and friends. To make the long story short, it enabled him to pass his finals. Friends and students began approaching Mark for pages of their own, and soon FaceBook, then called thefacebook.com was born.

Within a few weeks almost half of the Harvard population had a thefacebook page. His other roommates, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes joined in and helped Mark add applications and other features to the website. The three of them also shared the $85 per month hosting fee. Thefacebook.com continued to expand when friends and students from other universities asked for pages of their own.
The trio eventually decided to include the members of the Ivy League, Boston University and Stanford. Before long, thefacebook.com stopped being a “Harvard Thing” as it spread across universities, and schools all over the United States. Mark eventually dropped out of Harvard to run the website and in 2004, thefacebook changed its name to FaceBook after purchasing the domain name for $200,000.

Mark is now a very successful entrepreneur and CEO and President of FaceBook Inc. His company has received millions of dollars from venture capitalists. Microsoft recently purchased a 1.6% stake in FaceBook for over $240 million. This brilliant innovator now lives in Palo Alto, California where FaceBook’s headquarters are located. He receives offers from companies like Yahoo!, Microsoft and Google to buy out the company all the time but he steadfastly refuses to sell.
Today, FaceBook employs 700 people around the world to oversee their operations. The company also rakes in an estimated $300 million a year in revenue. Mark has come a long way indeed from FaceBook’s small time beginning.
