Definition of Communication / The Inter-Change of Thoughts

Communication is the process of transferring information from one person to another person. Communication is commonly defined as "the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs..." [1], 1: an act or instance of transmitting and 3 a: "a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior...also: exchange of information".

[2] Communication can be perceived as a two-way processing which there is an exchange and progression of thoughts, feelings or ideas towards a mutually accepted [clarification needed] goal or direction. Communication as an academic discipline relates to all the ways we communicate, so it embraces a large body of study and knowledge.

Definition of Communication / Putting it Into Action at Work

One of the more important aspects of being a good leader in any environment, especially the workplace, is that of communication. The ability to communicate with your workers enables you to help them understand the business model as well as keep employees informed on the status of the company and the employee's department so that each employee can contribute to those overalls goals in the most efficient manner possible.

Communication occurs via several methods. Verbal communication in the form of speech may be the most prominent method of communication; however, it is not the only method and it is not always the best method. Written communication is also used and may be relied upon more frequently now that many people are using websites and e-mail in their every day lives. Sign language is an example of communicating that uses language but is neither verbal nor written.

Definition of Communication / Spanning the Various Mediums

It's common for communication to happen over several mediums. For example, a presentation uses verbal speech, images and written language as forms of relaying a message to an audience. In many instances it is difficult to communicate by only using one format. When this is done, it makes the communication less clear. For instance if you are simply talking to someone on the phone, they will miss your very telling physical behavior that reveals so much.

If a speaker addresses an audience, she may focus on the language she is using, but the audience will also glean information from her posture and tone of voice. Because of this, the audience may react in a way that she did not anticipate. No one wants to send the message that she is not interested in what the audience cares about. This is why it is so important to develop more productive nonverbal communication so that a respectful connection is made between everyone involved.
