Definition of Fundraising Ideas / What is Fundraising

One of the most effective ways organizations raise money to fund their activities is through fundraising. A wide variety of organizations with concerns ranging from religious organizations to philanthropic ones depend on fundraising as a source for their operating expenses.

Fundraising means exactly what it says. It means the raising of money for a specific purpose. The most common entities that use fundraising are non-profit organizations. Human rights organizations, disaster relief groups, and humanitarian agencies are just some of the organizations that depend solely on fundraising to finance their operations. Political campaigns also raise the majority of their money through fundraising activities.

Some non-profit organizations engage the services of professional fundraising company. The payment for these services may be an amount of money that is not related to the amount of money collected by them or it can be a percentage of the total funds that have been raised.

Taking a percentage is expressly forbidden under the Code of Ethics of the Association of Fundraising professionals (AFP). There is an important distinction between two terms that have the potential to be confusing. “Fundraising professional “ usually refers to individuals who are members of the staff at charitable non-profit organizations while “ professional fundraiser” is taken to mean a third party individual or firm whose services have been retained through a contract.

Fundraising activities most often receive money as an outright gift but there are several types of fundraising. The majority of non-profit organizations receive money as their annual budget from a “financial endowment”. This is an amount of money that has been invested to generate sums of money annually. Some endowments are created when large amounts of money are received from an individual or a family but more often they are accumulated from many gifts over a period of time from different sources.

Sometimes non-profit organizations compete for grants funding. This money is usually offered by government or private foundations/charitable institutions for the benefit of all parties to the transaction.

Definition of Fundraising Ideas / Capital Campaigns

Capital campaigns are conducted to raise large sums of money for a specific purpose like a building or for the creation of an endowment. These funds are generally kept separate from the organizations operating expenses. Donors are often encouraged to give more than they usually donate in these campaigns. Often corporations and foundations that normally do not donate are tapped in these campaigns.

Another method of raising funds is done by organizing special events. Benefit concerts, formal dinners, and athletic events can all be used for fundraising as well as increasing the exposure of the organization or the cause of the organization to the public eye. Relationship building is the foundation of all fundraising. This is called donor cultivation by people in this line of work.
