Definition of Viral Marketing / The New Age’s Modern Advertising

The term Viral Marketing or internet viral marketing has been coined a lot by marketing gurus. This advertising technique was popularized by Steve Jurvetson and Tim Draper. In businessknowhow.com, it is stated that these men were “thinking of the ability of a biological virus to spread out of control” when they described Hotmail’s e-mail practice of attaching advertising for itself in outgoing mail from their users. Although many people attempted to rename it, even tame it, the word Viral Marketing has kind of stuck and was then preferred by many.

Definition of Viral Marketing / An Idea That Spreads

Viral marketing is an advertising method that encourages people to pass along a message. Its goal is to generate buzz about a specific product, service, a company or an idea.

Seth Godin, a renowned American author of business many books, formulated a definition of viral marketing that described it  as an “idea that spreads - and an idea that while it is spreading actually helps market your business or cause.”

Definition of Viral Marketing / Word of Mouth

Another way to define viral marketing comes from Sourcewatch.Org. This marketing site explained it as a “technique that uses word of mouth or email to reach and affect an audience. This will kick-start the spread of the virus that will propagate through an audience that will eventually influence others to try it."

The simplest definition of viral marketing is “word-of-mouth.” Other terms that are synonymous with this are network marketing, fission marketing, buzz marketing, avalanche marketing, ripple marketing, and many others. But on the Internet, it is basically viral marketing no matter how others try to modify or change it.

Viral Marketing / Is it Really Effective?

Instead of talking to clients, why not let your customers talk to each other? As any good viral marketing campaign will prove, word-of-mouth is the way to build brand awareness.

Surely everybody has heard of this new hype that is going on around the world – Twilight. There was not a lot of publicity made by the author or the publishers of the book. But the readers themselves created the buzz – passed it along to their friends and even to people they barely knew, and in time successfully established an awareness and recognition not only of the book itself but also to its author. Soon, this became a worldwide phenomenon.

Viral Marketing Example / The Dark Knight

What about the film The Dark Knight? The promotion of this movie lived up to the definition of viral marketing. According to Wikipedia.org, the film “combined both online and real-life elements to make it resemble an alternate reality game.

Techniques included mass gatherings of Joker fans, scavenger hunts around world, detailed and intricate websites that let fans actually participate in "voting" for political offices in Gotham City, and even a Gotham News Network that has links to other Gotham pages such as Gotham Rail, a Gotham travel agency, and political candidate's pages.” And added with the effective use of word of mouth technique, the movie sizzled its way to a box office hit in no time.

Viral Marketing / Is it Really Effective?

The power of internet viral marketing was clearly manifested in the abovementioned examples. While many companies throw a lot of money toward TV, radio, or banner ads just to attract audience, the advantages that buzz marketing offer are pretty obvious and can really help out to create the users’ familiarity of a particular brand. With viral marketing, you can make your way through the ladder of brand awareness with spending less and sometimes spending nothing.
