Ethics in Public Relations - let's face it, Public Relations has a negative connotation to it. But the truth is a carefully conceived and creatively played public relations plan can not only help a business generate more revenue, it can make the customer feel as if he won too. And who doesn't like a win-win?

This page is meant to show you that public relations is not what it used to be (see the public relations history page). Today your businesses' reputation and its bottom line can be increased in a way that you can feel good about.

Ethics in Public Relations / The Experts Speak Out

Steven Van Hook, who has worked in news media and international management, in his article Ethical Public Relations: Not an Oxymoron said:Many people perceive public relations as something less than respectable — as clever strategies to convince the public that what's wrong is right. Some see public relations professionals as manipulators of the public mind, rather than conveyors of truth.”

“That is likely the reason most every code of conduct, especially those targeted at the PR profession, stresses honesty above all else. Too often our conduct falls short of the code. Spin substitutes for truth. Perception substitutes for reality. Victory substitutes for success,” Mr. Van Hook said.

Ethics in Public Relations / The Truth Matters

In her article entitled Ethics and Public Relations, professor Shannon Bowen said, “In the US, early public relations practices introduced many ethical concerns because the press agentry … approach prevalent then emphasized hyperbole, sensationalism, and often lacked truth.”

“Public relations professionals should be the ones to alert senior management when ethical issues arise,” professor Bowen said.

Nihit Aurora, in her article, Ethics in Public Relations, said: “Looking at corporate PR from all angles, a standard of ethics is necessary to sustain an organization. Though many people believe that corporate PR is essentially false, it plays an important and crucial role in corporate organizations today.”

Ethics in Public Relations / A New PR Emerges

Ms. Aurora added: “PR has the power to influence the reasoning and thoughts of intended audiences. For this reason, many individuals and organizations are critical of PR. However, the cornerstones of PR are integrity and veracity. PR departments must not resort to lying. Even when managing crises, coming clean is the best strategy. Anything that involves cover-ups may spiral into more and more lies.”

“To avoid negative issues, every company and organization needs to establish a code of ethics for its public relations activities. In the absence of one, it may be helpful to turn to the many associations … that have established codes of ethics for public relations professionals,” Ms. Aurora said.

Here are some links to ethical codes of the major public relations associations:

1. Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management

2. International Public Relations Association (IPRA) Code of Athens

3. European Public Relations Confederation, also endorsing the Code of Athens along with its own code and the Code of Lisbon (web site is under construction).

4. Public Relations Institute of Australia

5. Public Relations Society of America

6. International Association of Business Communicators

7. Chartered Institute of Public Relations
