Examples of Courage
Courage is like a muscle. The more we exercise it, the stronger it gets. Courage is also one of those virtues that is essential for living a fulfilling life. But what is courage? Usually, the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of courage is bravery in the face of a threat; yet courage is so much more.
On one end of the spectrum one may feel like ‘I’m staying here where it’s safe. I know you are in trouble, but there's no sense in both of us being in danger.’ And on the other end of the spectrum you may feel, ‘I sense danger, and I’m going in not matter what.’
Let’s just say, for instance, that courage is the ability to choose the point that lies between cowardice and recklessness in any circumstance.
Many individuals may fall into the ‘middle way,’ and many of those thoughtful souls probably don’t consider themselves courageous. But the fact is many acts of courage are carried out daily in different kinds of situations.
There are many examples of courageous women in business. In fact according to the Center for Women's Business Research, female entrepreneurs generate $2.3 trillion to the American economy and employ more than 18 million people. So we did not have to dig deep to find the truly inspirational female business leaders. The following women in business have overcome great odds and serve as a beacon for all those to follow...
Examples of Courage / Katherine Graham
Katherine Graham is the CEO Washington Post.
Ms Graham did not have visions of becoming a mogul when she was a child. Life sometimes just throws circumstances at you when you least expect it, and how you react has a huge impact on what you wind up doing. So when Katherine Graham's husband committed suicide she did not take that as an opportunity to feel sorry for herself.
Instead she got up and made up her mind to take over her husband's position as the Post's publisher.
As Grahams says in her autobiography, Personal History, "What I essentially did was to put one foot in front of the other, shut my eyes, and strap off the edge". That courage led her to become the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Katherine's success can be summed up by her words, "To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun?"
Examples of Courage / Ruth Handle
Ruth Handle is the Founder of Mattel and the creator of Barbie.
Ruth grew up as many little girls playing with dolls - dressing them up and pretending to be grown up, sexy and sophisticated. But little did her parents realize that the wheels in her mind were already creating something that would become truly innovative.
Ruth Handler had strong beliefs that a woman should not be ashamed of her body - curves and breasts and all! That belief was so strong that it lead to the icon everyone knows as the Barbie Doll. Ms. Handler started as an entrepreneur in her garage in 1945 until she developed that home-based business into the Fortune 500 company, Mattel.
Ruth's courage and commitment allowed to carry out her mission while being blasted and ridiculed by feminists. And as if this was not enough to accomplish, this pioneering woman was also responsible for developing the 'Nearly Me' breast prosthesis following a mastectomy.
Once again, Ruth Handle displays courage in the face of adversity.
Examples of Courage / Mary Kay Ash
Mary Kay Ash is the founder of Mary Key Cosmetics.
Mary Kay grew up as a warm and likeable girl; and she stayed that way. In here early career she used this wonderful gift as a salesperson for a company called Stanley Home Products.
Ms. Ash was so successful that she went on to win numerous awards for her sales efforts. After retiring as a top dog in the company, Mary Kay decided she wasn't quite finished.
She still had the entrepreneurial fire that pushed her to finally pursue her dream of starting her own company. And Mary Kay Cosmetics was born.
Because of the birth of this company, many other women reaped tremendous benefits from selling her highly regarded products. But as in the examples listed previously, success did not come without challenge. Mary Kay's beloved husband died one month before the company launch but her philosophy endured, "If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can’t, you’re right."
Examples of Courage / Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is the Chairman Harpo, Inc.
If you've never heard of Oprah Winfrey you must have been living in a cave for the past 20 years. All one has to hear is her first name, Oprah.
Oprah is the first African-American woman to become a billionaire. And if you think it didn't come easy for Oprah, you could not be more right. In addition to growing up black and poor, she suffered at the hands of her father's child abuse.
Many would turn resentful and allow their lives to be consumed by anger, but Oprah channeled her angry into ambition. She set out on a course to be a journalist and nothing was going to stop her. Oprah began her television career at seventeen and her peers knew there was no stopping her when she turned around the failing AM Chicago Show.
From AM Chicago, Oprah went on to host her own national television show, Oprah, also filmed in Chicago.
Oprah's business and career success can be attributed her passion to help others. And she has inspired countless men and women during her mind-boggling career.
Oprah clearly states her corporate mission for the Oprah Winfrey Show: to use television to transform people's lives, to make viewers see themselves differently and to bring happiness and a sense of fulfillment into every home.
