FaceBook Controversy
FaceBook is one of the Internet’s most visited websites ranking right behind Google and Yahoo! in terms of traffic. Social networking websites like FaceBook have been touted as being remarkable as it has made communicating with our significant others easier. However, social networking websites are among the most criticized sites in cyberspace and one of the most talked about issue is privacy.
FaceBook Controversy / Terms of Service
In February 2009 FaceBook changed its Terms of Service (TOS). The change was subtle and went by unnoticed until Chris Walters, a blogger for the Consumerist (a consumer oriented blog) commented on the change. The original content of FaceBook’s TOS read:
“You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content."
In the new TOS, the FaceBook bigwigs removed the line “automatically expire." The license that they mention in the TOS pertains to the user’s image, information and other stored data that the user has uploaded on to the site. By deleting the “automatically expire” line, this means that FaceBook retains their rights to use these data in whatever activity they may have in mind even though the user has deactivated his account with FaceBook. Walters wrote in his blog that the omission of the said line gave FaceBook the freedom to use these data “forever”.
FaceBook Controversy / Terms of Service
FaceBook users rose up against the deletion of the line. More than 43,000 FaceBook users joined the protest and formed the People Against The New Terms Of Service Group. A lot of users were actually dismayed and outraged at FaceBook’s new move which prompted co-founder Mark Zuckerberg to revert to the old TOS and toss the new one on to the garbage bin.
FaceBook Controversy / ConnectU
Another fiery controversy for FaceBook actually ended up in the courthouse. The litigants who were Zuckerberg’s classmates at Harvard University claimed that he violated an oral contract and built FaceBook with source codes they had originally intended for use for their own website.
Zuckerberg’s classmates who own the website ConnectU.com were given an undisclosed amount of money as settlement for the lawsuit. They refilled the case however when they found out that FaceBook had devalued its worth even after Microsoft purchased a stake in the company. In February 2009, FaceBook was ordered to pay the plaintiffs $65 million, most of it in FaceBook stock and $20 million in cash.
FaceBook Controversy / Predators
Sexual predators are foremost on the minds of people, especially parents who have teenagers with FaceBook accounts. FaceBook and most other social networking websites have features which update information about friends in the user’s network. And since anybody can own a FaceBook account it has become easier for sexual predators to prey on their intended victims.
Because of this FaceBook has upgraded their News Feed and Mini Feed feature in order to make it harder for these kinds of people to proliferate. Members can now delete entries or restrict who can see their activities.
With 175 million members, FaceBook is the biggest social networking website in cyberspace today. And something that has a lot of following is sure to have its fair share of critics and detractors. FaceBook will always be in the spotlight and will always be scrutinized not only by its critics but by its followers as well.
