Everybody who wants to be seen, heard or just stay connected with friends, family, and business associates has at least one page on Facebook. To save yourself from becoming just one of the countless “faces” on Facebook, here are a few tricks and tips to stand out, be heard, and generate attention on the Web’s biggest social networking website.

FaceBook Tricks / Your Profile

First of all, start with your profile. Social networking websites like Facebook allow you to have as many applications and add-ons as you want, but you only have one profile, so make the best out of it. Make sure that this conveys exactly what you want, is clear and concise and shows you at your best.

Dress-up your Facebook page with a cool skin or background to add color and personality to your page. Update your photos, blogs, and entries regularly so that visitors keep coming back for more. Be witty, funny and creative when describing your whereabouts or activities.

Music is a universal language that effectively communicates our likes, dislikes and personality; so do not underestimate the Favorite Music category in Facebook. Music crosses boundaries and, let’s face it, people like to talk about it so share and update this section constantly, especially since cool bands, artists and singers change everyday. The favorite section is not only true for music of course, so the same should go for 'favorite food', 'favorite movie' and the rest of the favorites section.

The main purpose of Facebook and social networking websites is to make friends. So when you join social networking websites like Facebook, start inviting and making friends with your classmates, friends, family, colleagues, friends of friends and other people who interest you.

You can do this by directly inviting your immediate friends and family and also by joining groups, organizations and other institutions on Facebook. The Facebook of old where only college kids were allowed entry is now gone. Facebook has opened its doors to everybody so the number of friends and groups you can join is limitless.

However, please listen to this a word of caution. Since Facebook is open to everybody and anybody, this does not mean that we should 'OK' friend invites from strangers. Before we say yes to friend invites, make sure that you know the person and that you have no qualms about that particular person having access to your personal and sometimes private information. Above all, protect yourself and your information. Make sure that your privacy settings are set according to your preferences.

One of Facebook’s cool features is the Wall where you get to write short messages for your friends. Remember to write on your friend’s walls periodically so that they will write on yours too. But remember to keep the messages short and impersonal. Do not write messages like “call me on my new cell number 553-1234” or “Meet me at the corner of Main and Smith Street." Keep in mind that everybody can see and read your messages.

Facebook updates its applications all the time so make sure that you jazz up your page with the latest applications, games and add-ons. Keep your page interesting and constantly add and update your content. If the applications interfere with your profile or you have too many, then keep your favorites and remove the old ones. Remember that on Facebook you have to keep yourself interesting, so be interested too.
