FaceBook Virus

For Facebook users who got messages from their friends reading, “you look awesome in this video” or “ I have this hilarious video of you dancing, your face is so red, check it out”! and other similar messages then chances are, you were being attacked by the Koobface virus.

The koobface virus hit cyberspace’s most popular social networking website when thousands of users accidentally downloaded the koobface virus. The koobface virus hides in a .exe file when your browser prompts you to update your Flash player.

FaceBook Virus / Not So Funny

Unsuspecting victims of the koobface virus received messages from their friends containing messages about being in a funny video or something similar. Once you click on the message, the URL prompts the user to update his Flash player. There in lies the virus disguised in a flash_player.exe file. Kaspersky labs who worked closely with Facebook when the virus infection peaked around December 2008 described koobface as “the worms [that] transform victim machines into zombie computers to form botnets”.

When koobface is installed into your computer it prompts a downloaded service from Security Accounts Manager which steals results from popular search engines. Koobface can steal personal information like credit card account numbers. Koobface does this in two ways either by waiting for you to buy something online or by searching through cookies you might have from when you bought something online in the past.

Hackers like to target unsuspecting social networking websites like Facebook because you need to be a member in order to log in. The virus started attacking Facebook users in August and peaked in December of 2008. Facebook did not disclose the number of users that got infected but say that it was only a small percentage.

FaceBook Virus / Proctect Yourself

In order to avoid being infected with any virus, run a virus scan before installing anything in your computer. If you don’t know the sender, then maybe it would be better to not open the email. And lastly, clear out your cookies periodically in order to minimize stored information on the computer.
