FaceBook vs MySpace.

River Plate is bringing you this series of pages on the theme of social networking websites as a service to our customers, the business owner. We understand that the more information that is made available to businesses to market using the most current technologies and avenues the better chance they have of being successful. The services we provide (Pick and Pack in Southern California, Nationwide Trucking, and fulfillment in California...to name a few) could not be done without our loyal customers. It is because of them that River Plate continues to grow year after year. Our goal is 100% satisfaction on the work and service we provide to all of our customers. Providing information to help businesses thrive is one way we deliver.

FaceBook vs MySpace

FaceBook and MySpace are currently the biggest giants in the social networking department.  Both sites combined have over 300 million users around the globe.  But in cyberspace (just like in the real world) there will always be fans of one over the other.  But in the world of giants is there such a thing as “best” or “biggest”?

FaceBook vs MySpace / The Numbers

If this is a numbers game then FaceBook wins hands down.  Alexa.com currently ranks FaceBook number 4 right after Google, Yahoo! and YouTube in terms of traffic.  This means that FaceBook gets more traffic (visitors) than MySpace.  FaceBook currently has around 200 million registered users while MySpace has 150 million.  Most experts argue that social networking has become so popular these days that it is not uncommon to find abandoned accounts, people with multiple accounts or accounts that are not actual people but are organizations or groups.

Regardless of the details, Alexa Internet (a mega-site that evaluates online traffic) is a highly reliable source. And Alexa's numbers clearly place FaceBook ahead of MySpace when it comes to cold hard numbers.

FaceBook vs MySpace / The Fun Factor

For the “fun” aspect of both websites, MySpace wins.  There are many more resources like applications, games, add-ons, layouts, and backgrounds on MySpace than on FaceBook.  This is also largely due to the fact that MySpace lets its members personalize their websites to a greater degree than FaceBook.

MySpace members have more freedom to customize and personalize their pages to suit their personalities and characters.  FaceBook also allow their members to customize their pages (see the FaceBook Template page), but unlike MySpace, the freedom to do so is limited.   At MySpace you can customize your skin, your HTML or CSS codes and you can even personalize your URL - things you can’t do on FaceBook.

FaceBook vs MySpace / The Matter of Safety

In my opinion, both websites tie in this category.  In FaceBook, you have to be at least 13 to join. For MySpace you have to be at least 14 years old.  Both sites have very specific ways of ensuring privacy such as selecting which portions of your profile to make visible and to who is allowed to view certain parts of your profile.  You can also block users and report spam and abuse.  Unregistered members are also prohibited from browsing profiles in both websites.

In FaceBook for example, you can set your privacy settings to let certain people view your photographs but not your wall.  In MySpace, this same option is also available.

FaceBook and MySpace are both giants in their own right.  They have made connecting with family and friends easier, and they have also business networking to expand.  There will always be FaceBook fans and MySpace fans.  They may seem divided but in the end, they are just fans of social networking websites
