History of Communication / Sharing Information
Communication is the ability to share information. We need communication. Communication keeps businesses running and families together. In the Stone Ages the caveman needed inform his family that it was time to hunt down some dinner. And in the corporate world today, the businessman (or woman) many times is required to address a boardroom full of stuffy suits. The situations have changed, but communication is a factor that has always had its prominent place.
Our military forces would be useless, and our government would not work without it. Transportation and food supplies would not meet the need of the people. We would loose contact and connections with our families and friends. There would be no radio or television stations to entertain us, or movies to see. Society would get a look inside the life of a cellmate in solitary confinement. Not a pleasant picture, is it?
Maybe someday, we will have telephones like wrist watches... or, televisions with only interactive 3-D programming... or, we will develop telepathic capabilities with so all we have to do is think, and it is done...or, computers will be able to visually connect with anyone in the world, without cameras... only the future will tell.
But for now communication requires a human touch without the extrasensory perceptions. And I imagine (and hope) that it will be that way for quite some time.
History of Communication / Going Back in Time
The history or communication dates back to the earliest signs of life. Communication can range from very subtle processes of exchange, to full conversations and mass communication. Human communication was revolutionized with speech about 200,000 years ago. Symbols were developed about 30,000 years ago, and writing about 7,000 years ago. On a much shorter scale, there have been major developments in the field of telecommunication in the past few centuries.
History of Communication / Animal Communication
Animal communication is any behavior on the part of one animal that has an effect on the current or future behavior of another animal. The study of animal communication (zoo semiotics) has played an important part in the development of ethnology, sociobiology, and the study of animal cognition. Animal communication, and indeed the understanding of the animal world in general, is a rapidly growing field. And many prior understandings related to diverse fields such as personal symbolic name use, animal emotions, animal culture and learning, and even sexual conduct, long thought to be well understood, have been revolutionized.
Speech greatly facilitated the transmission of information and knowledge to further generations. Experiences passed on through speech became increasingly rich and allowed humans to adapt themselves to new environments (or adapt the environments to them) much more quickly than was possible before; in effect, biological human evolution was overtaken by technological progress and socio-cultural evolution. Speech meant easier coordination and cooperation, technological progress and development of complex, abstract concepts such as religion or science. Speech placed humans at the top of the food chain, and facilitated human colonization of the entire planet.
