Home Shopping Networks / HSN and QVC

Home Shopping Network or HSN is a 24-hour basic cable shopping network that can be seen on cable, satellite, and some terrestrial channels in the United States. The company also operates HSN.com, an e-commerce operation.

HSN offers many different types of products in a style meant to grab customers by constantly slashing prices and pressuring the potential customer with a "sold out never to be seen again" frenzy. It's like running through a shopping mall on the biggest clearance day in history. Total 1994 sales for HSN were $1.1 billion.

HSN Attracts Insomniacs

HSN (known to night owls as the Home Shopping Network) operates a home shopping television network that reaches more than 90 million US homes. HSN offers computers, electronics, fashion items, home and kitchen goods, jewelry, and health, beauty, and fitness products. HSN operates its business through two segments -- namesake HSN and Cornerstone Brands -- and peddles products through HSN.com and under several catalog titles.

The firm also operates shopping channels in China and Japan. Founded in 1977, HSN was a subsidiary of Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp until August 2008, when it was spun off.

QVC and HSN / How Do They Compare?

HSN does a nice job demonstrating their products, but there is no comparison to the creativity and studio presentation of QVC. There are several factors that make QVC the better shopping network. QVC does an excellent job at evaluating on-air talent (QVC hosts) and the hosts do their job extremely well. They are much more personable and funny than the HSN hosts.

The QVC Network offers products for just about everyone. HSN has good products as well, but QVC seems to have the superior quality and brand names. They have top jewelry and fashion designers and QVC has many different payment and shipping options, which also helps you save a few dollars.

QVC allows viewers an opportunity to tour their studio and also features live shows of different programs. The program host and guest interact with the audience. Audience members are given a chance to ask questions. QVC will also go out on tour to meet fans and look for new and exciting products. HSN, on the other hand, processes orders and returns quickly. The website of HSN is more user-friendly compared to QVC. Everything is extremely detailed at HSN.
