Facebook originally started out as a social networking website for Harvard University students. It was meant to be a way for these students to communicate and stay in touch with each other even through busy schedules, exams and other school activity. Today, the popularity of facebook is phenomenal.

And the most current statistics confirm that FaceBook is not just for students or the younger population. This mega-site is used with as much enthusiasm and success by professionals as it with students. Last February, FaceBook welcomed their 200 millionth member and has over taken MySpace to become the most popular, most visited and most “hit” social networking website globally.

How to Use FaceBook / It all starts with the profile...

If you would like to join the social networking bandwagon, then Facebook is the place to be. It all starts with the profile. Fill out and provide as much information as you “dare." When other people click on your page they want to know who you are and what you are all about. So your profile is like a picture of yourself. Put your best foot forward. Nobody likes to read an empty profile which only states your name and age.

Tell people what you like, what you are interested in and what your goals are. In a way, the profile is the “sell yourself” part of Facebook, so be specific. Under the likes or interest box, put something you really like to do and not just “lots of stuff”. People will usually click on the likes and interest button when they search for potential friends who they can share similar interests with.

How to Use FaceBook / Privacy

Now that you have set up your profile, you now have to guard this as zealously as you can. Most social networking websites have a system in place which allows your friends and peers to get automatic updates whenever you update your page. So when you post new photos of your most recent outings on to Facebook your friends and associates get notified. So hit the privacy tab on the Privacy settings and decide how to protect yourself while on Facebook.

Familiarize yourself with the different set-ups because you can actually choose who can and can’t view your page. This can make it hard for friends to find you. But setting up your privacy settings will allow you to filter out people who you don't know. Remember that friends and associates get automatic updates of your movements so make sure that you are really friends with these people. Choose your settings wisely.

How to Use FaceBook / Smile

Upload a photo immediately. The site is called Facebook for a reason. A photo makes your page more personal. This will also make it easier for friends and colleagues to find and recognize you. And since Facebook is a social network, add an actual picture and not your company logo or an image of something or somebody. Use a real photo of yourself.

Now that everything about you is up, look up your friends and family and colleagues. You can use the search button and type in their names and email. Hit the 'friend request button' and wait for them to add you up. You can also continue to jazz up your profile by adding videos, applications and more photos.
