Leadership Games / It's Time to Get Involved

Games are a great way to relax and build communication skills. They also serve to determine certain personality traits that people possess. Games can reveal if you are a team player or whether you are better suited to work alone. Leadership games seek to understand the underlying characteristic of trustworthiness and of developing creating win-win scenarios.

Trustworthiness refers to an individual’s ability to be honest, dependable and loyal. A leader who has the quality of trustworthiness means others will follow that leader's best judgment, because they will know that the leader has the interests of the whole in mind. Creating win-win scenarios means you are a leader who respects and listens to other viewpoints. By adopting an open mind you allow the exchange of ideas and a supportive environment - one in which everyone wins.

Leadership Games / Going for the Win-Win

Win-win is an expression that refers to having a favorable outcome for two parties that would otherwise have opposing values and/or interests.

“Blindfold”
This game seeks to assess the level of trustworthiness that an individual possess.
Things you will need:

Blindfolds

Instructions:

Divide the group into two (you can do so randomly or have persons pick a number from a bag; odd numbers on one side and even numbers on the other.)
Take one group out of the room and present them with blindfolds. Ask them to blindfold each other.
Tell this group that their colleagues will return for them and take them by the hand and lead them back to the room where there are two objects that they will have to identify. Their partners are however not allowed to speak during this activity but must instead communicate with them solely through touching.
Assure the blindfolded team members that their partners will keep them safe.
Instruct the team members in the room that they will go out and take their partners into the room one by one. They cannot communicate verbally with their partner. They must only lead their partner to one of the two objects in the room and help him/her identify the object through touching.
Start the game.

Observations garnered from this game:

One will notice that the blindfolded participants will behave pretty much like how people generally behave in real life. Although unsure of themselves and their partners, they are still willing to be led.
The partners who can see will generally grab the nearest “blind person” by the arm and lead them along forgetting that they cannot see. Once they come across the first obstacle and the blind partner stumbles, they suddenly realize the importance of leading their partner cautiously. They then become more careful.
Some persons are sensitive and will communicate with their blindfolded partners by touching the elbows or knees of their partner to guide him/her around obstacles.
The blindfolded partner is generally able to correctly identify the object and is led their seat once the blindfold is removed.

What have you learned?

Typical feelings will include anxiety, insecurity, responsibility and empathy. These feelings will often “blindside” the bigger picture though.

Lessons to be learned include the fact that:

Leaders always have the bigger picture
The rest of them have a different perspective (their own)
To follow a leader confidently, the leader needs to be trustworthy and communicate her trustworthiness to the person following her.
