Leadership Styles / What Are the 3 Ways to Lead?
The role that a leader takes on in any organization is largely dependent on the culture of that organization. A manager’s beliefs, values, cultural background and goals will greatly influence the style of leadership that he will adopt. It has been argued, and proven, that the style with which a leader runs his organization has great bearing on whether or not that business will be successful.
There are several different styles that leaders have adopted which have been identified through years of research and case studies: The Autocrat, the Laissez-Faire Manager and the Democrat. Each style is distinguished by its own set of standards and modus operandi. Managers may choose one particular style to define their role as leader or may use a mixture of styles to ensure the smooth running of their company.
Leadership Styles / The Autocrat
The Autocratic leader “rules” with an iron fist. This leader dictates to his team using a Unitarianism mentality. He disregards the feelings and ideas of the other participants and adopts a “my way or the highway” stance. Such a leadership style tends to lead to discord among a team with members who have valid ideas that would benefit the overall performance of the team.
Leadership Styles / The Laissez-Faire Manager
This leader exercises little control over his team. He does not participate in the daily operation of his team, leaving them to work on their own with little direction and guidance. This is an ineffective management style, because for any task to be successfully completed there needs to be a defined goal and there needs to be someone at the helm to provide direction and support.
Leadership Styles / The Democrat
The democratic leader makes teamwork his priority. By far the most effective leadership style; this leader consults his team and gets their feedback on tasks that need to be accomplished. He encourages the active participation of his team and delegates work based on skills and strengths but still keeps in mind that he carries the fundamental responsibility of leader.
A good leader encompasses all these qualities. In a situation where a decision needs to be made quickly, he must adopt the autocratic style. He should be confident enough to make a unilateral decision that will advance the interests of both his clients and his company. He should also be able to stand back and allow his team to be creative.
No one likes to feel stifled. People thrive on knowing that someone else is confident in their abilities. A good manger takes this into consideration and encourages his team members to work on their own. Ultimately though, a manager must build strong relationships with his team members and work in the best interest of his clients, ensuring that all their needs are met in an efficient and reliable manner.
