Leadership Theories / Capitalism Opens Our Eyes
When emergence of capitalism came the discussion of what it was that distinguished leaders expected from their followers. The notion that leaders were all born was thrown out the window and replaced by the fact that persons could learn leadership qualities. This debate raged for the past twenty years and led to the birth of a number of leadership styles and theories about leadership and, over time, eight theories were created.
“Great Man” Theory
The Great Man Theory presumes that the capacity for leadership is inherent; great leaders are born, not made. This theory often portrays great leaders as heroic, mythic, and destined to rise to leadership when needed. This theory was so named because during the time it was practiced it was believed that men were leaders and all leadership roles were for men and only men.
Trait Theory
This theory is comparable in some ways to the “Great Man” theory in that the Trait Theory claims that people inherit certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership. Trait Theory often identifies particular personality or behavioral characteristics shared by leaders. It does not, however, delve into providing rationalizations for the fact that there are persons who share common characteristics with certain leaders but are not themselves in leadership roles.
Contingency Theory
The Contingency Theory of leadership focuses on particular variables related to the environment that might determine which particular style of leadership is most appropriate for the situation. According to this theory, no leadership style is best in all situations. Success depends upon a number of variables, including the leadership style, qualities of the followers, and aspects of the situation.
Situational Theory
The Situational Leadership Theory is similar to the Contingency Theory because as the names suggest, the theory states that the style of leader is dependent on certain circumstances. This theory proposes that leaders choose the best course of action based upon situational variable. Different styles of leadership may be more appropriate for certain types of decision-making.
Behavioral Theory
The Behavioral Theory of leadership is based upon the belief that great leaders are made, not born. Rooted in behaviorism, this leadership theory focuses on the actions of leaders, not on mental qualities or internal states. According to this theory, people can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation.
Participative Theory
The Participative Leadership Theory suggests that the ideal leadership style is one that takes the input of others into account. These leaders encourage participation and contributions from group members and help group members feel more relevant and committed to the decision-making process. In participative theories, however, the leader retains the right to allow the input of others.
Management Theory
The Management Theory (also known as the “Transactional Theory”) focuses on the role of supervision, organization, and group performance. This theory bases leadership on a system of reward and punishment. Managerial theories are often used in business. When employees are successful, they are rewarded. When they fail, they are reprimanded or punished.
The Relationship Theory
The Relationship Theory (also known as the “Transformational Theory”) focuses upon the connections formed between leaders and followers. These leaders motivate and inspire people by helping group members see the importance and higher good of the task. Transformational leaders are focused on the performance of group members, but also want each person to fulfill his or her potential. These leaders often have high ethical and moral standards.
