What comes to mind when you hear the phrase 'managerial courage'?...telling people what to do...keeping a stiff upper lip...not folding under pressure?

The truth is if one is displaying managerial courage he is treating his team with respect. The type of courage we are talking about here, is one where one takes on an uncomfortable role with grace. This is a person that is willing to ask hard questions and make unpopular decisions.

Managerial Courage / Human Nature

We all like to be liked; this is basic human nature. But when one is being asked to manage effectively, that person cannot afford the luxury of pleasing everyone. A good manager is aware of weak links, and is not afraid to talk to members of the team that are not doing their jobs effectively.

The idea is not to berate those that are not living up to their potential, but to get to the root of the problem so that it can be fixed. A reactive manager is not one that is acting courageously. Instead, a firm yet thoughtful approach is more likely to get a desirable response.

Managerial Courage / Respect

People, whether in the workplace or in everyday life, deserve to be treated with respect. And just as a good manager should point out if a team member's performance is sub-par, he should also congratulate a team member whose performance is extraordinary. Awareness is needed to take in the details of any given situation.

And even though a task is expected to be carried out in a certain way, a courageous manager is willing to be flexible if he sees that an adjustment might be better for all concerned. Staying within the lines is sometimes just not practical. Courage comes out in a manager when he acts with confidence on behalf of the team. He knows his reputation is on line, and he acts with decisiveness because he trusts his instincts.

Lynne Dessert of Leadership Breakthrough web site, came up with a list of 10 Ways to Exhibit Managerial Courage. Lynne has over two decades of progressive Senior Human Resource and Line management experience, so she is in a great position to offer expert advice in this field:

1. Develop and communicate your vision, strategy and behavioral expectations. Walk the talk.

2. Create a safe environment where your employees can call you or their colleagues on bad behaviors. Use it as a learning experience rather than punishment.

3. Be willing to admit your mistakes publicly.

4. Evaluate performance against pre-established standards. Openly discuss shortfalls and remove barriers to close the gaps.

5. Establish and represent your own opinions, even if they are not in the majority. Knowing what you stand for will allow you to evaluate when to modify your position.

6. Listen to your gut - your internal messaging system is generally on the mark.

7. Work toward the good of the organization. Avoid personal agendas.

8. If your boss is wrong, learn how to tell them and keep them listening to you.

9. Ask for 360-degree feedback on your own. Modify where you believe it makes sense. Learn to live with your consequences.

10. Managerial courage is often inherent in born leaders. It can also be learned through personal development or coaching.
