Motivation Techniques / Motivating Your Employees
No two people are alike, just like no two employees are alike. We all have different needs and wants. In this sense we are all unique.
When it comes to motivating employees, there is no exact formula, no correct equation; it is a continuing study, always dynamic and full of challenges.
Motivating your employees is vital to any business organization. Motivation has a direct effect on productivity that affects profitability. And since no one method of motivation is correct or is designed to fit all employees, herein lies the challenge to management.
Motivation Techniques / The Different Approaches
Money is a very good motivational tool. Employees who are content and happy with their salary are happy employees. Aside from a good salary, monetary rewards can be in the form of bonuses for a job well done, rewards for good behavior or pay raises for consistent performance. However, money is not the only way to get your employees fired up and motivated. There are motivation techniques that are non-monetary but never the less are just as important.
Employees are just like you and me, they are human beings who have feelings. They are more than just the people who get us coffee every morning or the person who hands over the mail. Even a simple thing such as saying “good morning” or “thank you” and generally treating them with respect and politeness can be a morale booster.
Motivation Techniques / Listening
Another good technique would be to listen to them. Listening means you sit down together and actually listen to what your subordinate is saying. Studies have shown that managers spend just 2-3 hours out of the whole year listening to their employees. This listening means really listening without trying to multi-task or order lunch or answer the phone or any other task that seem to occupy us while having our “talk” with employees.
Listening means you care about what they have to say. Listening means you seek and value their opinion. Listening tells them that they are more than just the person who gets your coffee or hands in your mail. Listening shows them your respect.
Motivation Techniques / Implementing Proper Communication
Now that we know why listening is so important, we now have to effectively communicate to our employees what we want, why we need it, and when we need it. Open lines of communication between employees and managers mean that there is a fluid exchange of information, feedback, and response within the organization. Employees who have the information about their tasks are secure and efficient workers.
They know that they are working towards a goal and that they are following the correct path towards that goal. A manager who does not communicate his goals well towards his employees will have workers who are insecure about the process, ignorant of deadlines and procedures, inefficient and are generally unhappy soldiers.
Motivation Techniques / Leadership
They say that a good leader has to lead by example. As managers who want to motivate others, we have to walk the walk and talk the talk. So when employees see a manager who is motivated about his job, his motivation can infect his workers and inspire and drive his team to strive towards that goal.
A leader who shows that he cares about the welfare of his co-workers inspires these workers to care about each other too. When we care about each other, life in the workplace is easier, communication is straightforward and tasks are executed proficiently and efficiently.
Motivation Techniques / Recognition
When we recognize our employees by praising them verbally or via a written statement or through a reward like bonuses or trophy, it is like telling them that they matter. And they do. In large organizations it may seem that "little worker bees" do not matter, but in fact it is these workers that have a huge impact on the organization itself.
Imagine an assembly line full of unsatisfied, insecure, and disgruntled employees. Imagine the mistakes, the inefficiency, and the errors these workers are going to cost the company. This is why managers know that every single employee matters. Because they know that every employee is like a chink in a long chain where one affects the other.
We all need recognition. This is inherent in all of us. This is why as managers we need to recognize our employees. This is why even a simple “How are you?” is important, because it means that we recognize each other not just as managers and subordinates, but also as co-workers and people too.
