Motivation Theories / Defining Motivation

Motivation has been a fascinating subject for psychologists. Psychologists have been trying to explain why human beings behave the way we do. What motivates us to behave in a certain way?

Psychologists have come up with a few theories to better understand our behavior and the motivation towards that behavior.

Here are a few of them:

Motivation Theories / Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who came to prominence during the 1940’s to the 1960’s. His best known theory is the Hierarchy of Needs

His theory states that as human beings we have a lot of needs and wants. Needs and wants that have been satisfied do not influence behavior. These needs and wants are arranged according to priority, from the most simple and basic to the most complex. Needs and wants are satisfied according to this priority and the more needs and wants are satisfied the “healthier” a person becomes psychologically.

According to Maslow man has five basic needs. The first and the most basic are our physiological needs. Our physiological needs are food, water, clothing and shelter. Secondly we have our safety needs. Our safety needs address our need to feel safe and secure in our environment or our jobs. After our safety needs we have our belongingness need or the need to become part of society, to form and become part of relationships.

They say that no man is an island. The need to belong to become accepted or to become part of a group is an actualization of this saying.  Next we have our esteem needs. Esteem refers to our appraisal of our worth.  How do we feel about ourselves?  Self-esteem is like an internal inventory of the self. The last level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is self-actualization. This refers to the need to maximize one’s potential.

Maslow states that when all four needs have been met and satisfied self-actualization is the master motivator that is inherent in all of us. The four other needs are like stepping stones in order to help achieve this final motivator in all of us. This is the need to succeed, the need to maximize ourselves to the fullest, the need to fulfill our potentials.

Motivation Theories / Herzberg's Two Factor Theory

Frederick Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory states that there are two factors which contribute to job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction.  The first factor is motivation factor.  This covers a worker’s recognition at work, level of responsibility, challenge, etc. These elements give positive satisfaction.

The second factor is the hygiene factor.  Hygiene covers status, salary, job security, and fringe benefits. Herzberg states that hygiene factors when present do not motivate but when absent creates decreased motivation. However hygiene factors are needed in order to ensure that employees are satisfied.  Motivation factors are needed in order to ascertain that employees will always aim for a better performance. Hygiene factor was the name allocated as part of his theory because according to Herzberg the absence of hygiene can make you unhealthy but its presence will make you healthier.

Motivation Theories / Alderfer's ERG Theory

Clayton Alderfer’s ERG Theory is a simplified version of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Alderfer identifies existence, relatedness and growth as the primary factors in human motivation. Existence needs are our physiological and safety needs.  These are the most basic needs that need to be satisfied in order for us to exist and to live now and in the foreseeable future.  Relatedness needs are our needs to socialize and form relationships.

We are interested to know how people think of us. When we have satisfied this need we feel that we belong and that we have a sense of our position and identity within society. This need encompasses Maslow’s belonging and esteem needs. The last need according to Alderfer the growth need.  When we satisfy this need we feel the need to be creative, to grow, to fulfill ambitions and potentials. This need is the same as Maslow’s self-actualization need.

Motivation Theories / The Ultimate Need..."Me as a Person"

Maslow, Herzberg and Alderfer’s theories are only examples of the many theories out there seeking to explain why human beings behave the way we do. In an attempt to better understand human needs ongoing studies and researches are being conducted everyday.

In the workplace, organization, family or any other social structure human beings behave in a way that is dictated by motives. In the search to better explain and understand why we behave the way we do, one common factor seems to stand out: the need to be respected and to be seen as “me, a person”.

Whatever the motive is behind an action, whatever the reason we act a certain way, whether it is dictated by a need or a want, the final motivational factor seems to be the need to be recognized.
