Non-Verbal Communication Characteristics / What is it?
Nonverbal communication (NVC) is usually understood as the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless messages.
NVC can be communicated through gesture; body language or posture; facial expression and eye contact; object communication such as clothing, hairstyles or even architecture; symbols and info graphics speech may also contain nonverbal elements known as paralanguage, including voice quality, emotion and speaking style, as well as prosodic features such as rhythm, intonation and stress. Likewise, written texts have nonverbal elements such as handwriting style, spatial arrangement of words, or the use of emotions.

Much of the study of nonverbal communication has focused on face-to-face interaction, where it can be classified into two principal areas: environmental conditions where communication takes the place of the physical characteristics of the communicators, and the behaviors of the communicators.
Words are the medium in relaying a message to an individual or an audience. But aside from using the proper words, nonverbal communication characteristics must also be addressed in improve the dissemination of information to the audience.

Emotions involve conveying body language signs and emotions as your relay your message to the public. In fact, nonverbal communication characteristics are utilized by salespeople, CEOs, priests, and public speakers of all kinds to convince other people that what they are saying is worthy of their attention.
Non Verbal Communication Characteristics / Things to Look For
* Facial Expression - this makes up the largest proportion of nonverbal communication. Large amounts of information can be conveyed through a smile or frown. The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, and fear are similar across cultures throughout the world.
* Gestures - common gestures include pointing, waving, and using fingers to indicate number amounts.
* Paralinguistic - this includes factors such as tone of voice, loudness, inflection, and pitch. Tone of voice can be powerful. The same sentence said in different tones can convey different messages. A strong tone of voice may indicate approval or disapproval depending upon the intention behind the tone, whereas the same sentence said with a hesitant tone of voice may convey fear or lack often interest.
* Body language and Posture - a person's postures and movement can also convey a great deal of information. Arm crossing or leg crossing conveys different meanings depending on the context and the person interpreting them. Body language is very subtle, and may not be very definitive.
* Phonemics - this refers to personal space. The amount of space a person requires depends on each individual’s preference but also depends on the situation and other people involved in the situation.
* Eye Gaze - looking, staring, and blinking are all considered types of eye gazing. The way one looks at another person can indicate a range of emotions including hostility, interest, or attraction.
* Hepatics - this refers to communicating through touch. Hepatics is especially important in infancy and early childhood.
* Appearance - our choice of color, clothing, hairstyles, and other factors affecting our appearance are considered a means of nonverbal communication.

You can practice in the mirror to see the effect of maintaining eye contact or even how your face changes throughout a speech. With a little practice you can practically your communication skills in just a short period of time.
