Organizational Communication / Corporate Success

Communication is considered to be one of the most important elements to business success. That is why a large number of organizations are engaged in building a network of internal as well as external effective business communication methods.

Effective business communication enables an organization to market itself in a more effective way. It helps to create a favorable brand image and enhance its relationships with the public and the media. It helps an organization to motivate and guide its employees and share the values of the corporate culture.

With effective business communication, the employees can easily be trained about the corporate culture, vision, mission, plans and strategies. And, if this message is delivered professionally and respectfully, the team will carry out the mission of the corporation in an exemplary way.

Organizational Communication / The Corporate Vision

Within an organization a communication network is the keystone to every business. The company's vision will be carried out when the communcation network works like a well-oiled machine.

Organizational Communication can be categorized in three different categories:

Upward Communication
This is communication that occurs in an organization from peer to the managerial level and has a formal tone. An example of upward communication would be the feedback of an employee towards a manager about some specific report or task.

Downward communication
This communication takes place from the managerial level (or higher) towards the employees, and can be in the form of specific orders and/or instructions that are must be carried out.

Dyadic Communication
This is a friendly and informal communication that occurs between the peers of same organization. An example would be a conversation where ideas were exchanged between co-workers.

Organizational Communication / 7 Principles

Communication is based upon following seven principles.

These are known as the 7 C's of communication:

1- Conciseness. The intended message should be concise in nature so that it will be easy to grasp the receiver's attention and so that the receive will understand the message.

2- Concreteness. The message should be delivered firmly so that a degree of confidence is felt by the receiver.

3- Clarity. The message must be delivered clearly so that there is no room for confusion on the part of the receiver.

4- Completeness. It is important that the message be given in its entirety. Missed details will only cause confusion and lack of understanding.

5- Courtesy. Another important feature that needs to be considered is using a courteous tone. Most communications are not in the form of a reprimand. Encouragement and motivation are necessary for morale and productivity. Speaking with a courteous tone will help in this regard.

6- Correctness. The message conveyed will be more effective if it is delivered in a correct and grammatical way. Correct language commands respect and attention.

7- Consideration. There must be proper consideration in the message and it should emphasize attitude rather than "I" and "we" kind of words. Finger pointing will not help produce positive results. Communicating with consideration will yield high morale among the team, and produce a more supportive workplace.

Organizational Communication / 5 W's

Effective communication is also based upon the knowledge of the 5 W's: when, who, where, why, what? Understanding these details will create an atmosphere of confidence and support as well as externally enhancing the reputation of the whole organization. By improving these components and considering all the necessary elements, the end result will be a successful and productive organization.
