Not all of us had great role models when we were kids. That's why it is important to be able to look for people in the spotlight who represent qualities that we admire - a profile of courage that we can carry in our mind's eye.

Courage is definitely a quality that I respect. That's why when I was thinking of people that inspired me I looked for courageous women entrepreneurs. Being a woman and an entrepreneur myself, I tend to gravitate toward these role models. On this page I will focus on 3 particular women who displayed this quality of courage in the most inspiring way.

For all 3, success did not come easy. From childhood through their current success (and even beyond), these women came up against tremendous adversity. Motivated and resilient, each woman channeled all her energy in an innovative and constructive way.

We only get one shot at this life, so why not push past your fears and create an extraordinary life? I have provided these 3 profiles of courage to help you get there:

Profile of Courage / Mary Kay Ash

Mary Kay Ash is the creator of Mary Kay Cosmetics, Inc., a highly successful company which has influenced the lives of millions of people all over the world.

Mary Kay Ash is known for saying,

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember you can achieve."

This is the type of thinking that one needs to develop the virtue of courage. How do you value yourself? Do you bombard your mind with self-defeating self-chatter? Well - stop it!

Establish a success mind frame like Mary Kay did. I guarantee you she would not have succeeded without it. Is it easy? No, of course not. That's why so few people succeed to the level Ms. Ash has.

But ask this inspiring lady if it was worth it. Her positive thought patterns are well established by now, but only because she took the time to develop them. As Mary Kay says, "If you think you can, you can. And if you think you can't, you're right."

Don't waste another moment thinking limiting thoughts. Think big and act courageously. From there, things will fall into place.

Profile of Courage / Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick was the founder of The Body Shop, one the most successful retail shops that specializes in lotions and cosmetics.

Anita Roddick is known for saying,

"We entrepreneurs are loners, vagabonds, troublemakers. Success is simply a matter of finding and surrounding ourselves with those open-minded and clever souls who can take our insanity and put it to good use."

It is easy to become a loner when you are an entrepreneur. This special breed is independent. We are repelled by the 9 to 5 and the status quo, and comfortable in front of our computers reading our favorite blog from fellow entrepreneurs like Seth Godin.

But we live in a big world that operates with all kinds of people who all have unique personalities. And even entrepreneurs need to know that it is not possible to achieve a truly successful business in a vacuum. We need people. Remember the Barbara Streisand song..."People, that need people, are the luckiest people in the world."

Surrounding yourself with quality people is essential for success - in life and in business. We've all heard of creating networks. Social networking sites are all the rage, but don't get lost in cyberspace. Create networks of people that you meet with, bounce ideas off of, and learn from.

When you begin to feed off of other people, you will notice your enthusiasm becomes heightened. And enthusiasm is essential for success. As Ms. Roddick has said,

"An entrepreneur is very enthusiastic and dances to a different drum beat, but never considers success as something which equates to personally wealth. That never enters our consciousness. We have incredible enthusiasm, and I think part of the success of any entrepreneur is energy. If one has that energy one can create a wonderful enthusiasm. Entrepreneurs have this real belief that their lives are about services and leadership."

Profile of Courage / Debbie Fields

Debbie Fields is the founder of Mrs. Fields Bakeries and celebrated author of several cookbooks, one that made it to the New York Times Best Sellers List (the first time a cookbook made it!).

Debbie Fields is known for saying,

"The principle was right there - you couldn't miss it. The more you did for your customers, the more they did for us."

Debbie Fields understands the lesson that so many great entrepreneurs knew before her - it's not about what you want, it's about what the customer wants.

It's a matter of focus really. Are you focused on the details of your to-do list everyday and the numbers on your spreadsheet? If the answer is "yes" then you are in need of a major paradigm shift. Some people may have the idea that because they own their own business they don't have to answer to anyone. But the truth is you answer to your customer.

The people that buy your service or product should be your best friend. Learn about them, ask them questions, and respect their answers. Who are they? Where are they from? What is important to them? Why is it important? Their answers may surprise you.

Ms. Fields is always sensitive to what her customer wants. She explains her point of view in this quote:

"I've never felt like I was in the cookie business. I've always been in a feel good feeling business. My job is to sell joy. My job is to sell happiness. My job is to sell an experience."

Profile of Courage / Have Fun

The morale of the story when it comes to displaying courage and going after success is to have fun. Live your life like you know that you can't fail. Get to know inspiring and creative people and surround yourself with them. Look to the people that you are trying to reach. Never try to trick or manipulate your customer. Win them with respect.
