Public Relations Definition / What the Experts Say

In their 1984 book, Managing Public Relations, retired professors James Grunig and Todd Hunt define public relations as the management of communication between an organization and its public.

At Business Dictionary.com, public relations is defined as a “systematic effort to create and maintain goodwill of an organization’s various publics (customers, employees, investors, suppliers, etc.) usually through publicity and other non-paid forms of communication. These efforts may also include support of arts, charitable causes, education, sporting events, etc.”

Enterpreneur.com defines public relations as “using the news or business press to carry positive stories about your company or your products; cultivating a good relationship with local press representatives.”

Merriam-Webster Online defines public relations as “the business of inducing the public to have understanding for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution; also, the degree of understanding and goodwill achieved.”

Investor Glossary defines public relations as “the effort to spread interest and promote a favorable picture of a company, association, brand, idea, or some other entity.”

Public Relations Definition / A Two-Way Model

Retired professors J. Grunig and Hunt, in their 1984 book, Managing Public Relations, advocated for the classic public relations theory called two-way symmetrical model.

J. Grunig and Hunt said that the two-way symmetrical model uses research and other forms of two-way communication to facilitate understanding and communication rather than to identify messages most likely to motivate or persuade the public. The two retired professors added that in two-way symmetrical model, understanding is the principal objective of public relations rather than persuasion.

Public Relations Definition / Assumptions of Two-way Symmetrical Model

In their 1984 book, J. Grunig and Hunt identified many assumptions in two-way symmetrical model. These assumptions include “telling the truth,” “interpreting the client and public to one another,” and “management understanding the viewpoints of employees and neighbors as well as employees and neighbors understanding the viewpoints of management.”

In the 1992 book entitled Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management, retired professors J. Grunig and Larissa Grunig said: “Practitioners of the two-way symmetrical model are not completely altruistic; they also want to defend the interests of their employers—they have mixed motives.

Public Relations Definition / Role of Public Relations

At PR Conversations, a collaborative blog about global opinions on public relations, J. Grunig said: “I believe the role of public relations is to help organizations behave in ways that foster good relationships with the public and that do not result in the high costs of litigation, regulation, legislation, and negative publicity that irresponsible organizational behavior, poor relationships, and activist activity bring. I am advocating a management function that attempts to show management how serving the interests of publics is in the organization’s interest as well.”

“I believe that societal welfare is not a job of PR (Public Relations), it’s a job of democratically elected governments. The job of PR is to help its client or employer to develop strategy which will be harmonious with the society the organization operates in. It should guide the organization how to maneuver in a way which will be mutually beneficial for both parties,” J. Grunig further said at PR Conversations.

Public Relations Definition / Ultimate Goal of Public Relations

At PR Conversations, J. Grunig said, “The ultimate goal of public relations is to increase the total value that an organization creates for all of its stakeholders. Value can also be produced for employees, customers, government, communities, users, members, and others by creating meaningful jobs, useful and safe products, responsible behavior without the need for tax-financed regulation, pollution or traffic-free communities….”
