A Public Relations Plan - have you ever had one? Ever thought about it? If not, now is the time, because as more and more businesses market what they have, experts agree the best way to set you and and your business apart is through public relations.
Leanne Bucaro, who has more than 15 years of experience in communications and media, in her article, Starting Your Public Relations Plan, said, “It is never too early to start a PR Plan.”
She added: “For some reason, there's a misconception that the way to get publicity is to write a catchy press/media release and then send it out to thousands of editors. Under this perception, the more editors you get on your list, the higher your probability of success. While this may occasionally be true, in most cases, PR is not about scattering your message to anyone and everyone; it's about carefully seeding your pitches to the right people, the people who control the media you most want exposure in, with specialty pitches designed just for them. In other words, it's all about relationships.”
E-Agency Public Relations suggests that a good plan should include the following:
-
Goals and objectives
-
Define the target audiences and target messages
-
Plan how your media relations program will fit with your other marketing communications programs
-
Establish in advance how you want to measure the success of your program
Retired professor Michael Turney, in his article, suggested that for a plan to be effective, the following ten questions should be answered:
- Who are the organization's key target audiences?
- Why is this audience important to the organization?
- What view does the organization want this audience to have of it?
- What is this audience's current view of the organization?
- What issues and appeals are important to this audience?
- Which media does this audience use and trust the most?
- How does this audience's current view of the organization differ from the desired one?
- What message themes will have the greatest impact on this audience?
- What are the best ways of reaching this audience?
- Who will serve as the organization's primary contact for working with this audience?
An eHow Business Editor in the article, How to Write a Public Relations Plan, wrote: “When you write a public relations plan, you should first select the audience with whom you wish to share information. You'll then need to find the best way to convey that information, be it press releases, television spots or other avenues. By defining your purpose and keeping your plan in line, you'll achieve remarkable results.”
