Public Relations Theory / From Ancient Greece

If you own or operate a business you will want to know the ins and outs of public relations. Everybody's got a theory, and we have gathered some theories on public relations to help you understand long-lasting gains that can be achieved by implementing a well-thought-out public relations plan. Some of the quotes we have brought here may sound a little high brow, but the experts we have researched know the psychological impact properly executed public relations can make.

Tracing its roots from ancient Greece, rhetoric is the art of using language as a means to persuade.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere...

If you are a businessperson like I am, you know how effective (and yet tricky) persuasion can be. It may very well be the deciding factor when a prospective customer is on the fence. We all want the sale, but the last thing you want to do is be obnoxious.

Public Relations Theory / Negotiation is Required

In the 2000 book called Handbook of Public Relations, Robert Heath, the book’s editor said, “A rhetorical rationale for public relations is supported by the view that a public is a rhetorical community that develops a group consciousness around a problematic situation.”

Editor Heath added, “The rhetoric of public relations is a dynamic clash of narratives that can require that negotiation occurs to resolve differences and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.”

Does all this sound a little too intellectual? I understand...but there is a point. Public relations is a delicate blend of understanding and persuasion. The end result (if carried off with skill) is the customer and the business owner both wind up with what they want.

Public Relations Theory / Getting Your Business to Shine

In his paper called Rhetorical Theory of Public Relations: Opening the door to semiotic and pragmatism approaches, professor Steve Mackey points out that the whole world is in fact conceived through rhetorical processes.

Professor Mackey embraces the notion that “the whole of the public relations process from research to planning, resource allocation, execution among its publics and evaluation can be viewed as parts of a rhetorical process.”

The point of these scholastic references is to shed light on the fact that public relations is more than just a plan to make someone look cool or popular. A strategic and calculated public relations plan can catapult a business into a position that will bring in a steady stream of business for years to come.

“Our target audiences have only a limited capacity with which to interpret the conceptions which are aimed at them by forces with bigger and better financed capacities to create and deliver the client’s preferred signification of the world,” professor Mackey added.

Public Relation Theory / Proper Communication is the Key

In her paper entitled Towards a Postmodern Research Agenda for Public Relations,
Professor Derina Holtzhausen said that public relations practitioner should be the in-house advocate for the interests of the publics.

Professor Holtzhausen said, “The public relations practitioner needs to be aware of ... meaningless communication and should ensure that all publics are fully informed and participating in organizational debates. This can again be done by privileging the organization's publics in the communication process, thereby further supporting the activist role of the public relations practitioner.”

J. Grunig, one of the originators of the classical public relations theory supports the postmodern theory of professor Holtzhausen.

At PR Conversations, J. Grunig said, “Throughout my career of more than 40 years, I have viewed public relations as the management function that provides publics a voice in the decisions of organizations that affect them. At the same time, I believe that public relations must provide an organization a voice in conflicts with publics. This view is similar, if not identical, to Derina Holtzhausen’s postmodern view that public relations should be an in-house advocate for the interests of public.
