What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘image?’ An image is a mental representation, an idea, concept, or mental picture. So, what comes to mind when you think of Nike? Disney? Ford Motor Co.? Microsoft? Any of these ring a bell? What can you picture from these words? Whether it is negative or positive, these words [companies] create a particular mental representation. In connection with the definition of image stated above, it is this picture - the image -  that speaks for itself.

Public Relations techniques and strategies take a lot of planning, organizing and proper implementation. Making and maintaining a positive image does not happen in just a blink of an eye. Sustained effort is imperative. With this in mind, here are tips on how a company can create and maintain a good image.

  • Identify your strong points and your flaws. For companies that are in need of a little ‘revamp’, why not conduct a survey or interview to discover what people in your external environment think of you? Take a good look around you. With this point of view, you can implement changes on areas that need improvement.

The Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) found out that most Britons had negative perceptions of the corporation based on the results of the survey they conducted in 1987.

Because of this, ICI decided to implement worldwide advertising promotions and a series of educational seminars in redesigning their corporate image. This did not only positively impact the corporation’s image but it also boosted its public relations department.

  • As Steve Bolerjak suggested, ‘think through your audience.’ They (your customers) are very important to your business. An audience is a regular public that manifests interest, support, enthusiasm, or the like. If your audience manifests their interest in your company, make sure this is something positive. As Bolerjak further added, your spectators – ‘friendly or not - have the power to communicate information about you.’ It is of utmost importance that you serve your market/your audience. 

  • David Rourke believes that public relations should include the logo too. Every business should not take for granted the design of their logo. Why? A logo represents YOU – your company. It is an emblem that “connects you with your audience and serves as a public relations tool.”

  • Use the media. When you announce your plans to the world, what could be the most effective channel to communicate your message?  The media is always hungry for everything fresh and unique so that when you announce to the world news about your business, the press release will be something that will titillate them. Media coverage will always be a plus for your business.

  • Evaluate your plans. Was it successful? Was your scheme able to achieve your company’s objectives? It is paramount that you assess the results of your actions. So if your plans fail, you will know what areas need addressing.
