Situational Leadership.

The Situational Leadership Theory is an ideology created by Kenneth Blanchard and Paul Hersey. Over the years management professionals have been trying to determine the most effective leadership style so those in a leadership position can maximize the operations of their businesses. It was decided that the most successful leader was one who could adjust his (or her) behavior to meet the demands of the situation.

Each employee is unique with individual needs and desires. This Leadership theory is based on an interaction between the amount of direction a leader gives, the socio-economic support he provides and the level of readiness and commitment that the team members have toward a specific function, task, activity or goal that the leader is hoping to achieve through the team. This leadership model points out that there is no single “all purpose” leadership style but rather leadership that is specific to each employee.

The Situational Leadership model presents a template for effective leadership that involves four different ways of leading:

Telling / Directing
The leader defines the roles and tasks of the team members, and supervises them closely. Decisions are made by the leader and announced, so communication is largely one-way, but open for questions. This method is most effective for people who lack competence but are enthusiastic and committed. They need direction and supervision to get them started.

Selling / Coaching
Here the leaders still define roles and tasks, but they seek ideas and suggestions from the team members. Decisions remain the leader's privilege, but communication is much more two-way. This is best suited for people who have some competence but lack commitment. They need direction and supervision because they are still relatively inexperienced. They also need support and praise to build their self-esteem, and involvement in decision-making to restore their commitment.

Participating / Supporting
Using this method, leaders pass day-to-day decisions, such as task allocation and processes, to the team members. The leader facilitates and takes part in decisions, but control is left to the team member. This is especially suited for persons who have competence, but lack confidence or motivation. They do not need much direction because of their skills, but support is necessary to bolster their confidence and keep them motivated.

Delegating
The leader is still involved in decisions and problem solving, but control is with the team members. The team members decide when and how the leader will be involved. This is designed for those persons who have both competence and commitment. They are able and willing to work on a project by themselves with little supervision or support.
