What does it take to have the courage and the emotional commitment to lead others?

At its very basic level it takes a few essential ingredients:

1. Act with the utmost integrity.

2. Work with a clear vision in your mind's eye.

3. Carry on with an awareness that picks up on how others respond to your leadership.

4. Always make your commitment apparent by walking the talk.

The Courage to Lead / Taking the Steps into Action

Allow me elaborate on the 4 steps listed above...

Integrity.
To have integrity essentially means aligning yourself in everyway with your personal inner truth. This may seem like an elusive act, but with practice you will develop the skill do this as naturally as you breathe.

We all carry an inner wisdom with us, and we all have the power to access it any time we desire. Learn to quiet your doubts, and focus on what lies behind them. When you take the time to stop and breathe in the moment, your inner wisdom has a way of pushing its way past the chatter.

Vision.
Vision makes use of your inner wisdom as well. To hold a solid vision while you are working on a task requires tremendous focus. This focus will be your lifeline to see the project through to its successful conclusion.

Awareness.
While acting with the inner wisdom, integrity, and focus a great leader will also have the ability to be aware of what is going on around him at all times. His peripheral vision will allow him to filter out what is important and what is not.

Flexibility is necessary for this balanced state of being. You have probably heard of the expression, 'go with the flow.' Well an inspired leader is a master of going with the flow. His easy confidence gives him the ability to bend when he needs to, make adjustments, and stay on track.

Commitment.
Commitment goes hand in hand with the 3 previous steps. A courageous leader knows that it is his responsibility to see the task through. If it does not get it completed on time because of a mistake from another team member, the failure still falls on the shoulders of the leader. He understands this from the beginning.

The Courage to Lead / Teaching by Example

The leader's reputation is continually stake. His integrity is scrutinized with every decision. Because of this examination by his peers, an exceptional leader must always be courageously committed.

This is never considered as a burden to the true leader. Instead, the courageous leader accepts his role with honor and gratitude. He learns from those he leads, and teaches by example.
