Types of Communication / Encoding and Sending

Each communication type can be classified on the basis of the various methods, processes, channels and styles.

The process of communication involves the encoding and sending of a message by the sender and transmission of the same via a communication channel that is being received by the receiver. The receiver is then responsible for decoding and processing the transmitted information and replying back via a communication channel.

Types of Communication / Channels

Communication can occur through various processes and methods and, depending on the channel used and the style of communication, there can be various types of communication.

Based on the channels used for communication, the process of communication can be broadly classified as verbal communication and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication includes written oral communication whereas the non-verbal communication includes body language, facial expressions and visuals diagrams or pictures used for communication.

Types of Communication / Verbal

As stated above, verbal communication is divided into written and oral communication. The oral communication refers to the spoken word in the communication process. Oral communication can either be face-to-face communication, a conversation over the phone or a voice chat over the Internet. Spoken conversations are influenced by voice modulation, pitch, volume and the speed and clarity of speech.

The other type of verbal communication is written communication. Written communication can be via snail mail, or email. The effectiveness of written communication depends on the style of writing, vocabulary used, grammar, clarity and precision of language.

Types of Communication / Non-Verbal

Non-verbal communication includes the overall body language of the person who is speaking, which will include the body posture, hand gestures, and overall body movements. The facial expressions also play a major role since the expressions on a person's face say a lot about his mood. Other hand gestures like a handshake, a smile or a hug can independently convey emotions. Non verbal communication can also be in the form of pictorial representations, signboards, photographs, sketches and paintings.

Types of Communication / Formal vs. Informal

Based on the style of communication, there can be two broad categories of communication: formal and informal communication.

Formal communication occurs in a formal setting. Typically this can include all sorts of business communications. This style of communication is very formal and official. Conferences, meetings, written memos and corporate letters are used for communication in these instances. Formal communication can also occur between two strangers when they meet for the first time. There is a feeling of "having your guard up." This creates a feeling of watching yourself to make sure you act in an appropriate way, so that you give a good impression.

Informal communication is the unrestrained communication between people who share a rapport with each other. Informal communication happens when two people are on a similar wavelength, like with close friends or family. This type of communication does not have any rigid rules and guidelines. There are no restrictions on time, subject matter, grammar, or body language.
