Types of Motivation / From your Chatsworth Fulfillment House, River Plate
This page is brought to you by your friendly Southern California Fulfillment House, River Plate. We have had the great good fortune to expand our business, so we just moved to a new larger facility. And we are now your Chatsworth Fulfillment and Trucking Facility.
One of the reasons we moved to a larger facility is because our clients are doing so well. And when our clients do well, we do well. Many of our customers have stores online, and we provide the fulfillment services for their inventory - pick and packing, custom assembly, shrink wrap service, and a lot more.
Types of Motivation
Motivation is defined as 'the reason we behave in a certain way.' Human beings have different needs and wants and it’s these needs and wants that drive or motivate us to behave or respond in a certain way.
Types of Motivation / Intrinsic
Intrinsic motivation is when we behave or engage in a certain behavior that only benefits ourselves. Intrinsic motivation is when we engage in a certain hobby for our enjoyment, or going for that MBA, or save money for that new car. When we say intrinsic motivation, there are no external factors that influence this behavior. This is strictly for "me."
Intrinsic motivation has been the subject of study by psychologists since the 1870’s. They have found that intrinsic motivation is usually associated with educational attainment and enjoyment or relaxation.
In organizations or institutions, people see this as “giving back”. When you participate in charity events or good causes, it is a good bet that you are being motivated intrinsically because you feel that you are contributing for the common good.
Types of Motivation / Integrated
In the Integrated Motivational model, people behave in a certain way in order to satisfy their needs and wants. They satisfy this need by evaluating their past experiences, environmental factors and the perception required in order to achieve that goal.
For example: an employee wants to have a more open line of communication with his superiors. Before attempting a conversation, he first evaluates his past experiences with his superior. Is his boss the talkative or the silent type? During past conversations was he open, approachable or uncommunicative?
He also takes into consideration the surroundings. Can he be approached in the office? Is he busy? How long is this conversation going to take place? These questions are factors an employee considers before approaching his superior. His behavior before attempting to communicate his needs and wants to his boss reflects his motivation.
Types of Motivation / Identified
Employees who are motivated by identification behave in a way because it is a means to an end. Meaning, it is personal. In the workplace for example, there are always small groups that exist within the organization. These groups may be lunch groups or sport groups or just a group of friends. Most often than not, there is a leader and the reason why we follow that leader is because we identify with that person. In this form of motivation we join the group because of personal relevance rather than the activity of the group.
Types of Motivation / Intojected
Introjected motivation is behavior motivated by guilt. We all know guilt is a powerful motivator. Guilty feelings or behavior driven by anxiety, fault, or blame is a form of introjected motivation. Like "ratting out" the co-worker who stole materials, we can say that we spoke up about that person because stealing is wrong, but in the end, we all know that not telling will only leave us feeling guilty.
Types of Motivation / Extrinsic
Extrinsic motivation is when behavior is influenced by outside factors. Money is a very good extrinsic motivator. However there is also fear, threat or coercion.
At the office, competition is an extrinsic motivator, so are praise and recognition. Even the simple award of being “Employee of the Month” is a very good example of extrinsic motivation.
Motivate to Motivate
People are too diverse and too different in order to have a one perfect motivational tool. We all behave differently and have many needs and wants. We all seek to be recognized and to be praised. We all want to move, to improve and to see ourselves go up the scale. And our needs and wants change depending upon the circumstances of a particular situation.
This is where management is continually challenged, because motivation in the workplace is not an exact science. People are dynamic creatures who always need to be challenged. People need goals and achievement.
As managers it is our duty to motivate our employees. A motivated employee is a happy employee. He identifies with the organization and feels that he is working for the improvement of the organization. Furthermore, a motivated employee motivates other employees to stay motivated and be motivated.
