Get Ready to Attract Attention
What makes an ad so good that almost everyone wants to see it? The Internet has a plethora of entertainment for the senses for its users. For marketers, this is the best channel to connect to billions of Internet users around the world.
Brand building on the Internet is tough because of the thousands of brands that compete with each other. However, there are those brands that managed to rise above the rest, thanks to their brilliant viral marketing campaigns.
Below are some of the best viral marketing examples of all time...
Tea Partay
This is a viral video campaign that introduced Raw Tea as Smirnoff’s line of alcoholic malt beverages. The ad became an overnight success on Youtube. According to wikipedia.org, "it heavily exploited the preppie theme and is ostensibly performed by a band named Prep-Unit." The ad was a success because they were able to get the attention of the audience.
A lot of customers who have watched this would agree that Smirnoff was able to deliver the message they had intended. A brilliant viral marketing example, indeed.
Nike Football ad featuring Ronaldinho
As mentioned in Timesonline.com, this is one of the best viral marketing examples of all time. World famous football soccer Ronaldhino, who wore a pair of Nike football boots from a gold case, appeared in this popular clip ( and shown on Youtube ). Nike from this benefited tremendously. The renowned football player from Brazil showed his skills by “shooting volleys from outside the box onto the crossbar, controlling each rebound to hit the bar 4 times in a row”, according to Hitwise.com. This fueled the discussion as to whether the clip was computer generated or real.
Because viewers became interested in whether it was staged or not, this viral marketing example drew millions of people around the world to create a buzz about the clip. Massive discussions on chat rooms and online forums contributed to the positive impact on brand awareness it brought to Nike Football.
Mark Ecko
This viral marketing example has proven once again that people are eager to see something that is ‘unusual or unique’ and as Marshall said, the creative director of the ad, “that the mass media are always hungry for content. And that people don't mind being misled for a while as long as they're entertained along the way.”
The viral marketing campaign made by Mark Ecko even led to US authorities to investigate whether the ad was a hoax or not. Mark Echo caught the attention of the public when he ‘tagged’ Air Force One and discussed why he tagged it with the words ‘Still Free.’
The effective viral marketing campaign of the Still Free ad got the company ‘100 major broadcast news appearances, over 17,000 features in global news outlets, and a recorded 23 million unique visits in the first two weeks on www.stillfree.com.’
Million Dollar Homepage
“Perhaps one of the most famous viral marketing campaign ever made”, said Dan Zarella, a social and viral marketing scientist. This quote is making reference to a website intended to help raise money for Alex Tew's university education.
The idea was to make $1 million by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each. Every pixel-block measured 10x10 pixels where logos/ads/images of those who bought the space are placed permanently. Well, for the next 5 years at least, this inspired idea paid off in a big way. Click here to see the Youtube video.
What made this to our list? For one, the website was a huge success that raked in a whooping $1,037,000. The idea was very "out there" that it got the attention of the media and the cyber community. There were even copycats that popped out almost immediately. But this example of a viral marketing campaign remained on top because as Tew said, “They have very little ads, therefore I guess it’s not going too well for them. The idea only works once and relies on novelty. Any copy-cat sites will only have pure comedy value, whereas mine possibly has a bit of comedy plus. So I say good luck to the imitators.”
Thanks For Listening
