What is Courage / Webster

Webster's defines courage as "the quality of the mind that enables a person to face difficulty and danger without fear."

With due respect to Webster’s, most individuals considered "heroes" will tell you that they did experience fear. It just happened that their courage was able to overcome that fear.

It must be noted that courage would not be necessary if fear did not exist.

Having courage is important to all of us. Webster's identifies courage as "the quality of your mind that enables." so courage must exist inside your mind prior to its being activated.

What is Courage / William Ian Miller

William Ian Miller wrote a book about courage in a very interesting way. In the book he never actually answers the question, 'What is courage?' Instead he presents it as a virtue that leaves most of the world lacking.

To Miller courage is so elusive it is a mystery. And in fact he titled his book The Mystery of Courage.

As the author explains, "If I had a wish it would be never to be scared, never to feel the shame of being scared. Writing this book meant trying to understand my own feelings of cowardice. Even now, in day-to-day encounters, we politely accept behavior that, if we were brave enough, we would never stand for. Yet if we stood up to every opponent, we would be barbaric. So how do we live with ourselves when we're humiliated and fearful? What form should courage take? That's the question that keeps me up at night."

Miller presents many different scenarios that really make you see that courage is really a mysterious concept. Is a fireman courageous because he does his job? Is a mail carrier not courageous when he avoids the house with the large dog on a long leash? Is the motorcycle driver courageous when he drives with no helmet?

Sometimes posing questions is a great way to uncover the truth. But sometimes it just causes more confusion.

In the case of courage I think it's kind of like, 'you know it when you see (or feel) it.' When you do something that you have always wanted to do, but never thought you were good enough... that's courageous. I think Mr. Miller would agree.

What is Courage / Steps to Courage

I will...
1. Disregard others' judgments.
2. Order something different the next time you go out to eat.
3. Talk to a stranger in an elevator.
4. Volunteer for a charity.
5. Follow my heart even if I my head tells me something different.
6. Wear a bright color that will make you stand out in a crowd.
7. Read things that make you laugh right before you go to bed.
8. The next time you feel overwhelmed, write down what would make you feel better.
9. Join Toastmasters.
10. Contact a friend you lost touch with.
11. Get involved and speak up at your Homeowners Association.
12. Make your Christmas gifts this year.
13. If someone disrespects you let him or her know that is not acceptable.
14. If you don't know the answer to something, admit it.

Courage is more then rescuing a drowning puppy (or person.) Although some activities get a lot of attention, it's the little things we do each day that really constitute courage. So don't allow yourself to settle for mediocrity. Start small if you have to, but never look back once you begin.
