What is Flickr?

So...what is Flickr?

Flickr.com is an online photo sharing website. Flickr functions like a social networking website in a sense that it enables users to share photographs, videos, blogs and other stuff with each other via the internet.

Flickr has two main goals: first to help people make their content available to those that matter to them and second to manage and organize this content.

What is Flickr / A Little History

Flickr started out in Vancouver, Canada as a chat room in 2005. The chat room came with photo sharing options. At first users simply exchanged and posted images that they found on various websites. Later on it evolved into the Flickr it is today.

The old chat room was buried in the background. The site is also a popular blog site where users can rate, comment and communicate with each other. As of November 2008 Flickr claims to hold more than 3 billion images.

What is Flickr / Flickr 101

Flickr is free. All you need to do to sign up is a valid email address, a few clicks of the mouse and presto - you’re in. Once you have your account, you can now add photos to your photo stream. You can add one photograph or a whole album. You can then send and share these photos to those in your social network or broadcast them to other members. You can also use the site to crop, fix or edit your images. Organizing your photos is real easy as you can use your photo stream to group images accordingly.

Unlike other websites where there is a limit to the number of images you can store, Flickr does not. There is a bandwidth limit though. This means that although you can store as many images as you want, just as long as you don’t exceed the fixed bandwidth allotment given to free members. And even if you do exceed the bandwidth, you can just wait for the timer to start again. Or you can post images with lower quality so you won’t eat up the allotted bandwidth for free account.

Flickr is a wonderful site for any online entrepreneur. Why? Because web site owners know that their visitors love interesting pictures that are related to the content of their web site. And Flickr supplies billions of wonderful pictures to choose from. And they are absolutely free.

Many of the pictures that are posted on Flickr are of professional quality, and you will not find a better variety anywhere. Flickr simply asks that you put a link attached to the picture that credits the photographer.

So why spend between one and ten dollars for a picture on your website? It simply isn't necessary. Just go to Flickr.
