What is Leadership / Stepping Up

While in school we are always encouraged to work in groups and one of the first things that must be decided on before any work begins is who the team leader is. Why was it so important for us to decide who will lead the group? In all things there needs to be someone who accepts a sense of responsibility for the task that is to be completed by the group.

This person should ensure that things move smoothly within the group. This individual should also see that each person does their part and that the project is completed successfully because most people lack direction and need guidance. Leadership encompasses all these things. Leadership is the process whereby one gets people to a particular thing by using force or diplomacy or a mixture of both.

Every organization needs leadership in order to thrive. There must be someone or a team of persons that ensures that tasks are completed to meet the needs of the clients and the mission of the company. Leadership is synonymous with responsibility. A leader must accept responsibility for both the successes and failures of his company. It is said that leadership is not a skill, but there are number skills that must be learned in order to be a good leader.

What is Leadership / Charisma

Being charismatic is an important quality for leadership. But even though it is nice to know that you can win over a crowd, how far can your charisma take you if you are incapable of providing guidance for your team?

Leadership requires that one must be able to work well with others. You cannot expect to get things done if you are incapable of cultivating positive relationships with others. A true leader does not assert himself as the boss, rather he says we are a team but I accept responsibility for our accomplishments and for our mistakes. At the the same time others' ideas and participation are important and should be acknowledged.

Leadership requires discretion. People make mistakes that can be costly. Holding a position of leadership means that you must decide on the best way to implement discipline. A leader cannot be afraid to tell someone when he/she is wrong for fear that it will damage the relationship. Being a good leader already cements the basis of respect within that relationship.
