Why is Communication Important / Language Matters
Why is good communication so important?
Many scientists say that the humans are superior to animals because of language - the fact that we think and communicate in words. But while it is true we can speak, we don't always understand each other.
Why does this happen? Communication is not that easy as it seems and speaking is only one element that constitutes proper and effective communication. Statistics reveal that our use of words accounts for only 7-11% of communication. Body language and other non-verbal communication forms comprise the bulk of what accounts for effective communication.
Why is Communication Important / It's Good Business
Communication is not only important to properly run a business but also to having a fulfilling personal life. If you can't communicate your thoughts and ideas correctly you may as well shut yourself in your bedroom, lock the door and throw away the key.
Many situations can be affected by poor communication. That is why there are a myriad of programs (business and personal) that are offered to improve communication skills.
Why is Communication Important / Verbal vs. Non Verbal
Verbal communication requires language. A language is a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice, gestures or written symbols which communicate thoughts and/or feelings.
Non-verbal communication does not need language to exchange thoughts. Silence is best the example. In certain circumstances silence sends a powerful message. Some examples are: reverence, indifference, emotional coldness, rudeness, thoughtfulness, humility and aggressiveness.
Non-verbal communication also includes gestures, body language, signs and symbols.
Why is Communication Important / Content and Form
In day-to-day life we come across various forms of communication. When exchanging information between parties, communication includes expressing knowledge and experiences, giving advice and commands, and asking questions. These acts may take many forms, including gestures (nonverbal communication, sign language and body language), writing and speech.
Communication content and form create messages that are sent to a receiver. The target can be the person communicating or another person or another entity (such as corporation or group).
A particular instance of communication is called speech. Speech typically follows a variation of logical means of delivery. The most common of these, and perhaps the best, is the dialogue. The dialogue is a form of communication where both parties are involved in sending and receiving information.
There are many other types of communication. But the reason dialogue is the most well known and most widely used is because it lends itself to clearer communication due to feedback. Feedback is encoded information, either verbal or nonverbal, sent back to the original sender (now the receiver) and then decoded.
We all have the desire to be understood and this requires our participation. Life is much more fun and we will be much more successful when we learn to communicate. Please take a look at the communication links below to help you on your journey to mastering effective communication.
