What do you know about writing for public relations? Have you got an outline for your public relations plan? No worries, this is not a test. You are actually at the right place to learn how to build your business using the very powerful medium of public relations.

Ana Ventura, PR expert at DrNunley's, in her article about Public Relations, said: “Very large companies and corporations have a PR firm on a monthly retainer, meaning that they pay them every month to bust out public relations articles, press releases, or anything that needs to be written. Most likely this will not be a realistic approach for the small business owner.”

Writing for Public Relations / Why Freelance?

“So where do you go? Freelance writers are great place to start. They work on a per project basis, so if you've only got one or two documents to write up they will be your best bet. Freelancers charge either by the project or by the hour, depending on their preference. Fees for hourly writers can range from $50 all the way up to $150. Per project fees depend on what you'd like written, how long it is, and the complexity of the material,” Ms. Ventura said.

Brian Scott has been a professional freelance writer for more than a decade. In his article, What is freelance public relations writing? he says, “Becoming a successful freelance public relations writer requires you to write persuasively and analytically. The key to persuasive writing is the key to good writing in general: know your audience.”

He added that public relations requires you to address various audiences, such as your customer base, potential customers and the press.

Writing for Public Relations / Got Email?

Professor James Glen Stovall, in his book Writing for the Mass Media, wrote, “Most of the work of the public relations practitioner involves writing, and it is rare that only one kind of writing is required.”

Professor Stovall said that two of the newest ways for organizations to communicate with the public is through email and the World Wide Web.

The professor added: “Public relations practitioners will have to become adept at composing email messages and at understanding the functions and purposes of a website. They may be required to learn enough of the computer language to build or add to a website."
