So...what is the YouTube Competition?

YouTube is very popular indeed. It ranks directly behind Google and Yahoo as the most popular website globally. However, YouTube is not the only kid on the block.

Other popular video sites include Google Video, Dailymotion, Metacafe and Hulu. YouTube dwarfs all 5 competitors but nevertheless, these four ranks as YouTube’s closest competitors.

YouTube Competition / DailyMotion.com

DailyMotion is a video hosting website based in France. The site ranks at number 60 on Alexa.com globally. On a given month, DailyMotion averages 36 million views. Around 16 thousand videos are posted on to the site daily.

DailyMotion is more generous towards video length. YouTube videos can be uploaded 10 minutes at a time, while DailyMotion allows up to 20 minutes worth. Videos up to 150mb can be uploaded to the site.

YouTube Competition / MetaCafe.com

Metacafe is another video hosting site that specializes in short form original entertainment. Unlike YouTube and DailyMotion, Metacafe has a stricter adult video content filter. Users and members can review, rate and rank videos.

YouTube Competition / Hulu.com

Hulu like YouTube focuses on video streaming. Popular TV shows from Fox and NBC support the website as episodes are featured online. Videos are available in Flash format and some movies and shows are now available in High Def format. Videos, shows and movies are syndicated by the website and the channels and are available for subscribers online.

YouTube enjoys as much as 77 million unique views every month and its competitors are dwarfed by the sheer number of people who go to YouTube. But DailyMotion and the rest are not to be taken lightly. Some of these sites (especially Metacafe) have stricter adult content filtering systems that make it harder for jokers and people with malicious intent to post unsuitable videos on to their sites. Other people also prefer these sites because they are less commercialized.

Other sites that also belong in the top 10 and are worthy of honorary mention are: MSN Video, Veoh, Megavideo and Yahoo Video.
